ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Missouri S&T's baseball team bounced back from dropping the completion of a suspended game and seeing a three-run lead evaporate in the ninth inning with a four-run outburst in the 11
th frame, giving the Miners an 11-7 win and series victory over Missouri-St. Louis Sunday afternoon at the UMSL Baseball Field – a game that also saw the S&T pitching staff set a single-game record.
The Miners (4-4) carried a 7-4 lead into the ninth and got the first out when
David Kephart (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley Northwest) struck out Bryce Kulinski – one of a single-game record 20 strikeouts recorded by Miner pitchers Sunday – but following a walk to Brandon Pasley, the Tritons (2-5) strung together three straight hits and tied the game on Jon Hilpert's double.
UMSL would load the bases before the inning ended, but
Dylan Mollett (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) fanned Jared Bryant and
Elijah Gross (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit West) got Mitchell Spindler to hit a ground ball to third for an inning-ending force out to bring about the third straight extra inning game in the series.
Missouri S&T failed to score in the 10th despite getting its first two hitters on base, but didn't squander the opportunity it was presented the following inning.
Brady Wildschuetz (Foristell, MO/Francis Howell) drew a one-out walk, then
Dakota Sill's (Lansing, KS/Lansing) ground ball went right through the legs of Bryant and sent Wildschuetz to third. With two outs,
Michael Ward (Hazelwood, MO/Hazelwood West) was intentionally walked before
Doug Wood (Liberty, MO/Liberty North) hit a ball into the hole between third and short and beat the throw to allow the go-ahead run to score.
Garrett Weiner (Alton, IL/Marquette) followed by putting the nail in the coffin as he rifled a bases-clearing double to center to give Gross a four-run lead for the bottom half of the inning. The Tritons got two runners on base, but Gross recorded the 20
th strikeout for the Miners by fanning Trent Anderson to end the game.
The Miners scored the first run of the contest when
Will Hayes (Terre Haute, IN/South Vigo) came home on a wild pitch in the third, then the Miners added two in the fourth on an RBI ground out by Wildschuetz and a sacrifice fly by Hayes. S&T tacked on two more in the fifth on back-to-back sacrifice flies by Wildschuetz and Sill.
Dylan Dunbar (West Plains, MO/West Plains) held the Tritons scoreless on two hits through the first five innings, striking out eight along the way and setting down 12 straight in one stretch. However, UMSL got back into the game against the Miner bullpen, scoring four in the sixth to cut the lead to one before the Miners tallied single runs in the seventh on another sacrifice fly by Wildschuetz and in the ninth when
Aaron Berkhoff (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain) scored on a wild pitch.
The Miners and Tritons had 12 hits apiece; Wood had three of the Miner hits while Hayes, Ward and Weiner had two apiece.
Besides Dunbar's eight strikeouts, Matt Kaiser had two to get the Miners out of the sixth inning jam, while Kephart fanned five, Mollett one and Gross – who picked up the win -- finished with four.
In the completion of the suspended game from Saturday, the Tritons scored in the bottom of the 10
th to win the game 6-5 when Pasley singled over a drawn-in infield to plate pinch-runner Isaac Powers with the winning run.
Missouri S&T will open its GLVC schedule on Friday when it hosts Indianapolis at 2 p.m. at the S&T Ballpark.
