Miners rally in ninth to take GLVC opener over Greyhounds

WESTFIELD, Ind. – Will Hayes (Terre Haute, IN/South Vigo) doubled in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth – his fourth hit of the game – to give Missouri S&T's baseball team an 8-7 victory over Indianapolis in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener Friday afternoon.

The Miners (5-4, 1-0 GLVC), playing as the home team in the game as the series was moved to Indiana due to the rainy weather in Missouri this weekend, fell behind in the top of the ninth on a solo home run by Trey Smith, but came right back in the bottom half as Brady Voss (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty) drove in the game-tying run before Hayes doubled into left to bring home pinch-runner Aaron Berkhoff (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain) with the winning run.

After S&T starter Cade Meier (Dakota, IL/Dakota) set the Greyhounds (1-6, 0-1 GLVC) down in order in the first, the Miners grabbed the lead as Will Hayes (Terre Haute, IN/South Vigo) singled and advanced to second on a error, then crossed the plate in front of Michael Ward (Hazelwood, MO/Hazelwood West) when the senior first baseman belted a home run to center.

S&T added to its advantage in the third, as Brady Voss (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty) reached on an infield hit and came around to score on a double by Hayes.  With one out, Keegan Baxmeyer (Waterloo, IL/Freeburg) doubled into center to allow Hayes to score, then Baxmeyer scored himself on a two-out hit by Doug Wood (Liberty, MO/Liberty North).

UIndy got on the board in the fourth when a run scored as the Miners turned a double play, then added two more in the sixth on Hunter Waning's two-run homer.  The Greyhounds then grabbed the lead with a three-run seventh, as Smith tripled in the tying run and scored the go-ahead tally on a successful squeeze bunt by Brandon DeWitt.

But in the bottom of the seventh, the Miners bounced back with a two-out rally, as Voss singled, stole second and came in to score on a hit by Hayes to knot the contest at six.

However, Smith again hurt the Miners as he hit a two-out solo home run off reliever Bryce Charipar (Cedar Rapids, IA/Xavier) in the top of the ninth to put the Greyhounds back into the lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Miners got their first two runners on base on infield hits and with one out, Voss delivered a game-tying single to center and Hayes followed with the game-winning double to give the Miners the series opener.

Hayes had four of the Miners' 12 hits in the contest – Uindy outhit the Miners 13-12 – and drove in three runs while Voss added three.  Charipar, who pitched the final two innings for S&T, got the win in relief.

The Miners and Greyhounds will continue their weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday that will begin at noon Eastern time.
