KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Trips to Rockhurst for Missouri S&T's men's soccer team have usually ended up with the Miners on the short end of the score, with the first 19 trips there resulting in losses.
But after a second half rally on Friday afternoon, the Miners have now won two straight at Loyola Park as S&T got second half goals from
Dario Rossell (Madrid, Spain/IES Lazaro Cardenas) and
Luan Barbosa (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio SESI) to come away with a 2-1 win for its first victory of the season.
The Miners (1-1-1) fell behind in the 34
th minute of play when Jacob Weaver took a pass in front of the net and put it past S&T goalkeeper
Michael Sallee (Springfield, MO/Catholic). However, the Miners outshot the Hawks (1-1-1) 6-5 in the opening half and was finally able to break through in the second half.
Moments after the Miners cleared away a dangerous chance in front of their own net, they got a corner kick opportunity in the 57
th minute and executed it perfectly as
Josh Wobbe's (Collinsville, IL/Collinsville) pass into the box was headed in by Rossell to even the contest.
The Miners grabbed the lead 18 minutes later when Barbosa scored an unassisted goal, then the Miner defense took over as it prevented the Hawks from even getting a shot away over the final 15-plus minutes of play.
S&T, who won in overtime on its last trip to Rockhurst in 2017, held a 12-7 in shots during the game and had seven shots on net to the Hawks' two.
Missouri S&T will remain on the road this weekend as it will take on Southwest Baptist Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in Bolivar, Mo.
