ROLLA, Mo. – Windy conditions at the S&T Ballpark Sunday afternoon created a lot of offense, but a majority of it came from visiting Quincy as the Hawks beat the Miners 13-5 to gain a split of the four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series. S&T also fell in the completion of Saturday's suspended game by a count of 21-14.
With winds blowing out at over 15 miles per hour and gusting over 30 at times during the day, the Hawks were able to make the better of the conditions in game two as they built a 9-0 lead through the first five innings of play. Quincy scored a single run in the first, then posted four runs in the second and two apiece in the fourth and fifth innings before the Miners got on the scoreboard in the sixth on
Michael Ward's (Hazelwood, MO/Hazelwood West) two-run homer.
S&T scored two more runs in the eighth as
Will Hayes (Terre Haute, IN/South Vigo) led off with a hit and stole second, then came around to score on
Keegan Baxmeyer's (Waterloo, IL/Freeburg) two-out single. Baxmeyer ended up at second on an error, then scored on a hit by
Tate Morrell (Lloydminster, AB). The Miners also scored in the ninth on an RBI single by
Doug Wood (Liberty, MO/Liberty North) that scored
Garrett Weiner (Alton, IL/Marquette).
Quincy outhit the Miners 17-7 in the contest, with Morrell getting two of the S&T hits. Starting pitcher
Dylan Dunbar (West Plains, MO/West Plains) took the loss for the Miners.
In the completion of the suspended game, S&T scored four times in the bottom of the sixth and five in the seventh, but that sandwiched a seven-run seventh inning by the Hawks that was highlighted by Lance Logsdon's grand slam.
In the sixth, S&T's first five runners reached base with the first two scoring when
Dakota Sill (Lansing, KS/Lansing) and Hayes were hit by pitches. The third run of the inning scored on a double play and the fourth came across on a hit by Ward.
S&T sent 10 batters to the plate in its five-run seventh, with two scoring on a double by
Chase Burgess (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley West) and two more on a hit by Weiner. S&T's other run came in on a wild pitch.
Quincy had 20 hits to S&T's 11 in the game; Hayes, who had five runs batted in, and Weiner had two hits each for the Miners.
