Miners fall in series opener to No. 14 Prairie Stars

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Missouri S&T took the initial lead Thursday afternoon in the opening game of its series against 14th-ranked Illinois Springfield, but the Prairie Stars took the lead in the bottom half of the first and maintained that advantage for the rest of the day in a 10-6 win over the Miners.

The Miners (8-9, 4-5 GLVC) got on the scoreboard first, as Will Hayes (Terre Haute, IN/South Vigo) drew a walk to lead off the game, moved to third when Doug Wood (Liberty, MO/Liberty North) reached on an error and scored on a hit by Michael Ward (Hazelwood, MO/Hazelwood West).  However, the Prairie Stars (15-2, 11-2 GLVC) answered back with four in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game on a Zion Pettigrew RBI single and then getting back-to-back home runs off the bats of Kal Youngquist and Chris Monroe off S&T starter Nate Wodka (Allen, TX/Allen).

S&T loaded the bases in the third with one out and got a run across with two outs when Brady Voss (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty) was hit by a pitch, but was unable to add any additional runs in the threat.  UIS got that run back right away on another RBI hit by Pettigrew, then scored another run on an infield out, but the Miners cut down a runner at the plate to prevent a third run from scoring in the inning.

But the Miners responded by scoring twice in the fourth to cut the margin in half, which began with consecutive one-out singles by Hayes, Wood and Ward to load the bases.  S&T's first run scored as the result of an error when a ball was thrown into center field and then after the Miners reloaded the bases, Andrew Branson (St. James, MO/St. James) drew a walk to force in another run.

UIS extended its lead in the fifth on Asher Bradd's run-scoring single, then tacked on three more runs in the eighth.

The Miners scored twice in the ninth on a Voss triple that scored Branson before Voss scored himself on a groundout by Garrett Weiner (Alton, IL/Marquette).

S&T got three hits apiece from Hayes and Ward as it outhit UIS 12-11 in the game, but the Miners also left 12 runners on base.  Wodka, who pitched the first three innings, was charged with the loss.

The Miners and Prairie Stars continue their series with a noon doubleheader on Friday.
