Miners Start Final Road Swing at Jewell, Southwest Baptist This Week

3/22/2021 11:14:00 AM

ROLLA, MO.- The Miners (9-5, 9-5 GLVC) will begin their last leg of GLVC division play this week when they travel to William Jewell and Southwest Baptist this Tuesday and Saturday, respectively.

S&T is coming off a 3-0 sweep of Maryville after nearly taking down AVCA top-ranked Lewis earlier on Saturday. After having match-point against the Flyers in the fourth set, Lewis' offense took flight and forced a fifth set where errors against the Miners threatened their upset and faced the 3-2 match loss.

In their match against the Saints, S&T cruised to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-21) win after recording 39 kills and 9.0 team blocks.

For the season, Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) and Jordan Burton (Olathe, Kansas/Olathe South Senior High) have been the Miners biggest hitting threats with 172 and 170 total kills, respectively, while Avery Reed (Ste. Genevieve, Mo./Ste. Genevieve) has been right behind them with 115 kills and 2.62 kills/set. Hannah Merjil (Bakersfield, CA/Garces Memorial) has taken over responsibilities in the setter's position leading the team with 417 assists while she and Gannaway have also been threats in serving with 43 combined service aces.

On the defensive side, Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) and Shelby Ply (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) have been held down the fort in blocks with 19 combined solo blocks and nearly 40 assisted blocks between the two of them. In the back row, Meiko Pearson (Overland Park, Kansas/Blue Valley Northwest) has been the Miners constant in picking up digs with 185 with Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) not far behind her with 105 digs.

Earlier this season when the Miners faced off against the Cardinals and Bearcats, S&T picked up both wins.

Jewell gave S&T some trouble in the team's home opener back in February; the Cardinals picked up wins in the first and third sets and nearly came away with a win in the fifth set, but errors from WJC and a big kill from Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) gave the Miners the 15-13 set five win.

It was a much different story in the Miners match against Southwest Baptist. After taking 25-19 and 25-13 wins in the first two sets, S&T held the Bearcats to just four kills in the third set and cruised to the easy 25-9 win for the 3-0 sweep.
