ROLLA, Mo. – On Friday night, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team let a 2-0 lead slip out of its grasp in an eventual 3-2 overtime loss to fifth-ranked Maryville.
The Miners flipped the script on Sunday at Allgood-Bailey Stadium, overcoming a two-goal deficit in the second half and using a late goal to upend Lindenwood in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest by the same 3-2 count.
Jacob Bandy (Bettendorf, IA/Pleasant Valley) scored on a rebound with 2:42 remaining in regulation time to complete the rally and bring the Miners back to the .500 mark at the midway point of the season at 3-3-1, while handing the Lions (2-6) their third straight loss.
The Lions took the lead in the game in the 34
th minute when Malek Akar-Jackson got behind the Miner defense and after getting his initial shot stopped by S&T goalkeeper
Michael Sallee (Springfield, MO/Catholic), had the ball come back to his feet and after making a quick move to get around the goalkeeper, hit a shot into the lower right corner of the net.
Lindenwood added to its lead with just five seconds to play in the first half, as Daniel Jimenez got his head of a corner kick attempt that was deflected into the air and floated it over the Miner defenders in front.
But just over 13 minutes into the second half, the Miner rally began after the Lions were called for a foul in the box to give S&T a penalty kick;
Paal Benum (Trondheim, Norway/Byaasen Videregaadende) converted the attempt to cut the Lindenwood lead in half. Then with the clock down to just over 17 minutes remaining, the Miners tied the score on a goal by
Sean Perryman (Springfield, MO/Glendale).
Julien Denis (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) played a ball in front of the net that was pinballed around until a clearning attempt came back to out to Perryman, who hit a shot from about 20 yards away past Lion goalkeeper Zachary Martin into the lower right corner of the net.
The Miners netted the game-winner after Denis took an initial shot from about 20 yards away that was stopped by Martin, but he was unable to keep control of the rebound. After a couple of shots at the net were stopped, Bandy got a second opportunity and put home the game-winner.
S&T outshot the Lions 19-9 in the contest, including by a 13-4 margin in the second half. The Miners had a 12-5 advantage in shots on net; Sallee made three saves in goal for S&T.
The Miners will return to action with a pair of road contests next week, beginning with a Friday afternoon game at Missouri-St. Louis.
