ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T grabbed a two-goal advantage over fifth-ranked Maryville Friday night at Allgood-Bailey Stadium, but was unable to hold off the Saints as they took a 3-2 decision in double overtime in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest.
Ben Brodie's third goal of the game, which came 1:39 into the second overtime period, won the game for the Saints as they improved to 7-0 on the season and dropped S&T to 2-3-1.
The Saints got the ball deep into the Miners' end of the field and as the ball came loose in front of the S&T goal, Brodie got to it and hit into the back of the net to end the contest.
Brodie had scored in the 63
rd minute of play less than three minutes after S&T had taken its two-goal lead, then tied the contest in the 77
th minute.
The Miners took the initial lead just 1:39 into the game when
Grant Polman (Wentzville, MO/Holt) made a cross that ricocheted in front and rolled free near the goal post, where
Jason Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria) dove and headed the ball in to put the Miners in front.
S&T took that 1-0 advantage into the second half despite being outshot 8-4, then prevented a chance for Maryville to tie it early in the second half when
Jacob Bandy (Bettendorf, IA/Pleasant Valley) cleared a ball off the end line in the 51
st minute.
The Miners got their second goal in the 60
th minute when a ball played into the box was cleared out, but went right to Polman and he put into an open net to extend the advantage.
Maryville outshot the Miners 21-6 as S&T goalkeeper
Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) was credited with two saves. The Saints also had 12 corner kick opportunities in the contest.
Missouri S&T will wrap up its three-game homestand Sunday when it hosts Lindenwood at 2:30 p.m.
