ROLLA, Mo. – After playing 90 minutes of scoreless soccer, Missouri S&T needed just two minutes and 45 seconds of extra time to record a victory Friday night, as the Miners got a goal from
Jason Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria) to beat Drury 1-0 at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
Jorgensen took a pass out of the corner from
Grant Polman (Wentzville, MO/Holt) in the middle of the box and hit a shot past Drury goalkeeper Yannick Lamers into the lower left corner of the net to end the contest.
Friday's match was a tightly contested game between the rivals, as the Panthers (2-2) finished with a 15-10 advantage in shots, but S&T (2-2-1) had six of its attempts on goal to the Panthers' two. Drury also had eight corner kick opportunities while the Miners finished with seven.
Jorgensen had S&T's best scoring chance in the first half when he had an attempt cleared from the front of the net by the Drury defense. S&T goalie
Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central), who recorded his first career shutout Friday, made a good stop in the 56
th minute on an attempt by Adem Hamdaoua.
Jorgensen scored on the only shot attempted by either side in the overtime period, as the Miners picked up their first overtime victory of the season in three tries and first shutout since playing to a scoreless tie with William Jewell on Oct. 4, 2019.
The Miners will be idle until next Friday when they continue their homestand with a visit from fifth-ranked Maryville at 7:30 p.m. The Saints are currently 5-0 after a win over Southwest Baptist on Friday.
