Saints edge Miners in overtime on last second shot

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's basketball team missed an opportunity to extend its home winning streak to three games Thursday night, as Maryville's Jaelon Hood hit a three-pointer with 3.5 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Saints a 70-68 win over the Miners at Gibson Arena.

The Miners (4-11) took a one-point lead in the tightly contested game when Mitch Fairless (St. Charles, MO/Duchesne) hit the second of two free throws with 1:14 to play, then the Miners forced a turnover when Maryville's Donovan Parker stepped out of bounds with 56 seconds remaining.  However, S&T turned the ball over to the Saints (7-9) with the shot clock running down and Maryville ran down the clock before finding Hood in the corner for the game-winning three-pointer.

Thursday's contest wound up in overtime after the Saints overcame a four-point deficit with 17 seconds left in regulation time.  The Miners went up by four after Fairless sank two free throws, but Daniel Farris was fouled on a drive to the basket and made the subsequent two free throws to cut the S&T lead in half.  Maryville then fouled Julien Smith (Fort Worth, TX/Northwest) on an inbounds pass and Smith missed the front end of a one-and-one; Farris again drew a foul going to the basket and made both free throws with 1.2 seconds left to extend the game.

The Miners came out of the gate cold, making just one field goal in the first 7:37 of play before Kevin Legardy (Las Vegas, NV/Canyon Springs) hit a three-pointer to cut Maryville's early advantage to five.  The lead would grow to 10 just past the midway point of the first half before the Miners went on a 13-0 run to take their first lead of the night; a put-back by Smith during the run put S&T up for the first time at 19-18.

Neither team held a lead of more than three points for the remainder of a low-scoring first half – one that Maryville led 24-23 at the break – then the Miners moved back in front on their first possession of the second half on a trey by Kaden Froebe (Lincoln, IL/Lincoln).  However, Maryville would regain the lead a short time later as the teams to set the tone for the second half as the two squads swapped the lead nine times.

Maryville led by four at 51-47 with 6:40 remaining before the Miners ran off seven straight points to take the lead back.  Smith knocked down a three-pointer to tie the game at 51 with 5:59 left, then Froebe put the Miners back in front the next time down the floor when he hit a three of his own after the Miners got an offensive rebound.

The Saints took their last lead of the second half with 2:48 to go, but Legardy drained a three to put S&T up 61-59.  Then just over a minute later, Legardy got the rebound on a blocked shot by Mahamadou Kaba-Camera (Conakry, Guinea/Balboa City (San Diego, CA)) and went the length of a floor for a lay-in to extend the lead to four.  Farris hit two free throws before Fairless hit his two with 17 seconds to play prior to Farris going four-of-four in the final 10 seconds to send the game to overtime.

Legardy and Smith had 18 points apiece to lead the Miners, while Fairless finished the night with 14 and Froebe with 13.  After shooting just 31.8 percent in the first half, S&T shot 55.6 percent in the second half – but scored all of its overtime points at the free throw line.

Froebe and Legardy had three steals apiece for the Miners, while Kaba-Camera matched his career high with four blocked shots in a contest that ended with eight ties and 15 lead changes.

The Miners return to action Saturday when they host Lindenwood at 3 p.m. at Gibson Arena.  The Lions (7-8) lost 90-71 Thursday at Drury.
