ROLLA, Mo. – For the second time in three days, Missouri S&T's men's basketball team came up short in overtime as the Miners dropped an 89-77 Great Lakes Valley Conference decision Saturday afternoon to Lindenwood at Gibson Arena.
After both teams had opportunities to take the lead at the end of regulation time, the Lions (8-8) got the jump on S&T in the extra period and never trailed as they outscored the Miners 22-10 in the five additional minutes of play. Lindenwood's Romelo Burrell hit a three-pointer to start the overtime session, then after
Mitch Fairless (St. Charles, MO/Duchesne) scored on a lay-in to cut the lead to one, the Lions scored the next five points and never looked back.
Cameron Scales' three-point play after the Lions got two offensive rebounds – on what was Scales' only field goal of the game – pushed the Lindenwood lead to six to close that spurt.
Saturday's game turned into a scoring dual between Fairless,
Julien Smith (Fort Worth, TX/Northwest) and
Kaden Froebe (Lincoln, IL/Lincoln) on the Miners' side and the Lindenwood trio of Burrell, TJ Crockett and Brandon Trimble as they produced 82 percent of the points scored by the two teams in the contest.
After the Miners held the lead over the first seven minutes of the game, the Lions took their first advantage on a basket by Crockett at the 13:04 mark. Lindenwood would maintain a narrow lead for most of the remainder of the period – S&T did tie the score at 17 on a basket by Smith at the 7:49 mark – but was able to build it to seven on a putback by Burrell with four minutes left in the half.
Lindenwood would lead by six at the intermission and built it into double figures early in the second half, taking an 11-point lead when Trimble drained a three-pointer at the 17:11 mark of the half.
Still down by 11 with under 15 minutes to play, the Miners began clawing back into the contest and closed the margin to five on a lay-up by Smith with 12:17 to go. The Lions would extend the lead back to eight, but the Miners fought back again by outscoring them 10-1 over a span of three minutes, cutting the lead to 57-56 on Fairless' three-point play with 5:12 left.
Trailing 62-56, Smith took over matters for a few minutes as he hit back-to-back three-pointers to tie the contest with just under three minutes left. After Fairless made two free throws to put S&T in front and Crockett tied the game for Lindenwood with a lay-up, Smith hit another three with 1:35 to go to give the Miners a 67-64 lead.
However, Burrell answered with a three-pointer of his own to knot the score again at 67, which is where it remained for regulation time after each team missed their chances late.
The Miners, who made 53.3 percent of their shots from the field in the second half, made only four-of-12 from the floor in overtime and the Lions were able to seal the victory at the free throw line, where they went 13-of-15 in the extra session and ended the game by going 33-of-40 from the charity stripe.
Smith had a career-high 32 points to lead the Miners – scoring 19 of them in the second half – while Fairless recorded 17 points and Froebe finished with 14 points, a career-high 16 rebounds and two steals.
Crockett, the third-leading scorer in NCAA Division II entering Saturday's game with a mark of 26.1 points per game, had a game-high 33 points to lead the Lions, while Burrell added 26 and Trimble tacked on 14. The Lions made only 37.3 percent of their shots from the field, marking the third straight game than a Miner opponent has finished under 40 percent from the floor.
The Miners are scheduled to be on the road for their next two contests, starting with Thursday's 7:30 p.m. game at Missouri-St. Louis.
