Miners Tie With Cardinals in Home Opener

ROLLA, MO- After dropping their season opener to Truman State on Friday night, the Miners welcomed the Cardinals of William Jewell to town for their home opener. While S&T was able to strike first, a late goal from Jewell would send the game into double overtime an end in a 1-1 tie.

The Miners controlled the pace of the game from the get-go; S&T recorded seven shots in the first half, three of them on-goal, compared to the Cardinals two.

Beth Roberts (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty) would give S&T the lead in the 43' when she broke away from WJC's defense sent one into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

S&T would hold that lead for much of the second half. They also held Jewell to no shots; that was until Kayla Crowder was able to get one behind the Miners goalkeeper in the 83' to tie the game at 1-1. The Miners would get one last shot to get the win when Melanie Kulig (Belleville, Ill./Belleville Township) got a shot off in the 85' but was ultimately saved by Katie Wagenheim of WJC.

Both teams would take the 1-1 tie into the first overtime.

With their late goal, the Cardinals came into the first overtime with momentum, firing off three shots in the 10 minutes of play. While their last shot was on target, S&T's Viktoria Johnson (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) made one of her three saves for the day. The Miners would get another chance to end that game with a shot from Ally Hasken (Freeport, IL/Freeport) in the 98' but it would sail too high of the net and send the game into a second overtime.

Both teams would see chances to end the game, but neither was able to connect for a Golden Goal and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
