Miners play to draw with Cardinals in home opener

ROLLA, Mo. – For the second time in as many games, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team saw its game go beyond the 90-minute mark and this time came away with a draw as it played to 1-1 tie with William Jewell at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

The Miners outshot the Cardinals 14-5 in the contest and 7-3 in shots on net, but it was William Jewell that got the first goal of the game when Ethan Nichols scored in the 39th minute as he got Carson Lee's feed through the S&T defense and redirected a shot by Miner goalkeeper Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central).

S&T answered back nearly three minute later, as Leyton Harper (Andover, KS/Central) sent a pass to Paal Benum (Trondheim, Norway/Byaasen Videregaadende) down the sideline and Benum hit a long shot by Jewell goalie Eli Gratz to tie the score.

Michael Sallee (Springfield, MO/Catholic) took over in goal for the Miners in the second half and turned away the Cardinals' best scoring chance after the goal, stopping a shot by Chris Cotton in the 82nd minute.  The Miners had three great scoring opportunities in the first overtime period, the first coming when Joe Mueller's (Cottleville, MO/Francis Howell Central HS) shot in a crowd was stopped by Gratz.

Later in the period, Jason Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria) had a shot hit the goal post and then hit a shot just wide of the net a short time later.

Sallee made two saves in goal for the Miners (0-1-1), while Gratz finished with six saves for the Cardinals (0-1-1).

Missouri S&T heads to the road for its next two contests, beginning with Friday's 7:30 p.m. match in Kansas City, Mo., against Rockhurst.
