Miner soccer team falls in overtime in season opener

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – After battling in a scoreless battle for nearly 100 minutes, Truman State's Sam Newton scored with 43 seconds remaining in the first overtime period to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 win over Missouri S&T Friday afternoon in the men's soccer season opener for both teams.

The Miners were called for a foul a little over 25 yards away from the goal to bring about the free kick chance and Newton hit a shot into the upper left corner to end the contest.

In the first half, each team had one shot on goal with the Miners' coming from Sean Perryman (Springfield, MO/Glendale).  The Miners also had a good opportunity in the 57th minute, but Joey Keane turned away a shot from Leyton Harper (Andover, KS/Central).

S&T had another good chance in the 73rd minute when Andrew Heider's (Hazelwood, MO/Hazelwood West) header following a corner kick was cleared off the goal line by the Bulldogs.  Heider had another head ball opportunity off a free kick with under five minutes remaining in regulation time that was stopped.

Moments later, S&T goalkeeper Michael Sallee (Springfield, MO/Catholic) turned away a good scoring chance on a low shot by Simo Valentino to keep the game scoreless, then Sigurd Semlitsch (Oslo, Norway/Stabekk Videregaaende Skole) had a last-second opportunity to win it for the Miners stopped by Keane.

The Miners outshot the Bulldogs 11-7 in the game and had seven shots on net to three for Truman.  Sallee was credited with two saves in goal for Missouri S&T, who will open its home schedule Sunday when it takes on William Jewell at 2:30 p.m. at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
