ST. LOUIS, MO-Looking to start the weekend with a win, the Miners headed up to St. Louis to take on the Tritons of Missouri-St. Louis. While S&T did all they could to stop UMSL, the duo of Alex LaPorta and Kiara Stewart were hard to put a lid on as the Miners faced the 77-54 loss.
The Tritons jumped out to an early lead after a 9-4 run put the Miners down 18-8. S&T would get a free-throw from
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) and a lay-up from
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) at the buzzer to cut their deficit to 18-11 heading into the second quarter.
S&T and UMSL traded baskets to open the second quarter that included back-to-back three-pointers from
Eryn Puett (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge) and
Jada Lindesmith (St. Peters, MO/Lutheran). While S&T was able to get within six of the Tritons, they would soon see another 11 point deficit going into the half after Alex LaPorta grabbed an offensive rebound and laid it in just as time expired to make it a 37-26 halftime score.
An 11-3 run early in the third quarter would give the Tritons the 50-34 lead with 5:46 remaining. S&T fought to stay within reaching distance, getting lay-ups at the end of the quarter from
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) and
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) to cut into UMSL's heading into the final quarter.
While the Miners tried to make a comeback in the fourth quarter, the Tritons lead was too much to come back from and S&T suffered the 77-54 loss.
Eryn Puett (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge) and
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) led the way for the Miners with 12 points each while they also led the team with five and seven rebounds, respectively.
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) added in eight points and seven assists.
As a team, Missouri S&T (3-14, 3-14 GLVC) finished the game shooting 39.7% from the field and just over 37% from beyond the arc.
