Miners Battle with Tulsa in Exhibition Action

TULSA, Okla. – The Missouri S&T women's basketball team was back on the court at the Donald W. Reynolds Center Wednesday night for an exhibition matchup against Division I opponent Tulsa. The Miners (2-5) shot 50% from the field in the game and were able to pace the Golden Hurricane (7-0) during the middle stages of the contest as the home team picked up the 86-53 win.
 
Tulsa scored first and charged out to an 8-0 lead to begin the game before S&T got baskets from Katelynne Roberts (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) and Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) on back-to-back possessions to get back within four. The Golden Hurricane answered and were able to push their lead back to nine at 15-6 with 3:57 to go but again the Miners managed to close within four by way of a Jada Lindesmith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lutheran) three and a layup from Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy). Tulsa scored the final six points of the quarter to lead 21-11 after 10 minutes.
 
The home team pushed their lead to 15 in the opening moments of the second period before Kristen Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy) checked the momentum with a basket at 8:18 to make it 26-13. Tulsa led by as much as 19 in the period on three occasions, but S&T closed out the half strong. A Lindesmith three at 3:39 kicked off a 13-5 run to close out the half that also saw a trey from Addyson Kent (North Vernon, IN/Jennings County) and baskets from Kerr and Eryn Puett (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge) to make it 41-30 heading into halftime.
 
The Golden Hurricane opened the third quarter with back-to-back baskets to push their advantage back to 15 but the Miners remained focused and managed to close back within single-digits behind a 7-0 run started by a Keys jumper and capped with a triple and transition basket from Rodriguez to make it 45-37. Tulsa was briefly able to push the lead back to double-digits before Roberts connected on layup to make it 48-39. A three from Tulsa on their next possession pushed their lead back to double-figures for good, but the Miners kept battling throughout the third quarter as thirty minutes elapsed with the score at 60-44.
 
Tulsa outscored the Miners 26-9 over the final 10 minutes as S&T got baskets from Rodriguez, Lindesmith, Keys and Michaela Davis (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk) to close out the evening with the festivities coming to a close with a final score of 86-53.
 
Lindesmith led S&T with 14 points on 5-6 shooting and was 4-5 from three and also had three assists. Rodriguez posted 11 points on 5-9 shooting and added four rebounds. Roberts finished with seven points and four boards while Michaela Davis (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk) also had four rebounds. 10 different Miners found the scoring column in the game as 14 players took the court over the course of 40 minutes.
 
Up next, the Miners return home Saturday afternoon for a contest with William Woods scheduled for 1 P.M.
