SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Missouri S&T grabbed a lead with under a minute to play Tuesday afternoon, but was unable to hang on for the victory as Arkansas-Monticello pulled out a 64-63 win over the Miners at the Doubletree Holiday Classic at Drury University.
Julien Smith's (Fort Worth, TX/Northwest) lay-up with 56 seconds to play broke a 61-all tie, but the Miners couldn't come up with the rebound after UAM's Ray Price missed two free throws with 37 seconds left. Cole Anderson got fouled and made one of two at the line with 25 seconds on the clock, then Miner freshman
Dylan Singleton (Lincoln, IL/Lincoln) was fouled in the backcourt after the inbounds pass but missed the front end of a one-and-one to keep the S&T lead at one.
UAM's Jesse White, who hit a three-pointer with 2:17 to go to bring about the tie at 61, missed a three-pointer out of the corner, but Anderson got the rebound and was fouled with 2.3 seconds to go. Anderson made both free throws to put the Boll Weevils (4-1) back in front, then UAM stole a long inbounds pass to seal the win.
The Miners spent the bulk of the first half and much of the second half in a deficit. S&T fell behind early by as many as eight points early in the game, but used an 11-0 run to take their first lead at the 9:17 mark of the first half.
Kevin Legardy (Las Vegas, NV/Canyon Springs), who had a nifty assist on
Alex Strating's (Wassenaar, Netherlands/American School of the Hague) lay-up to tie the game at 16, hit a three-point on S&T's next trip down the floor to put it on top.
The teams traded baskets, with Strating scoring again to give the lead back to the Miners at 21-19, but the Boll Weevils used an 8-0 spurt late in the half to take a nine-point lead and led 35-30 at halftime.
UAM continued to hold the advantage into the second half and led by seven after a Josh Williams basket at the 11:36 mark. At that point, Smith – who had only two points at this juncture – came to life to bring the Miners back into the contest.
He hit two free throws 12 seconds after the Williams basket to cut the lead to five, then his three-pointer with 7:39 remaining drew the Miners even at 51. With S&T up 59-56, he hit a tough shot in the lane to extend the advantage to five and scored the go-ahead basket on a drive to the basket after UAM had missed three opportunities to move in front prior to that.
Smith led the Miners with 17 points and scored 13 of S&T's final 23 points.
The Miners had three others in double figures, as
Kaden Froebe (Lincoln, IL/Lincoln) finished with 13 points, Legardy with 11 and Strating with 10. S&T shot 46.2 percent from the field for the game, but made just three-of-13 from three-point range. The Miners also outrebounded UAM 36-34, with Parker pulling down a game-high nine boards.
Anderson had 15 points to lead four Boll Weevils in double figures, but UAM made only seven-of-28 from the field in the second half and finished the game at 33.9 percent overall. However, the Boll Weevils forced 19 Miner turnovers in the contest.
Missouri S&T will return to the floor Wednesday to take on Southeastern Oklahoma State at 3:15 p.m.
