Volleyball Downed in Straight Sets by Greyhounds

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Missouri S&T volleyball team was back in action Saturday at the Ruth Lilly Center for their second matchup of the season against Indianapolis. The Miners (15-9, 8-5) played the Greyhounds close for the duration of the match but couldn't find a way to overcome the home team, falling to the Greyhounds (12-13, 8-5) in straight sets (25-23, 25-23, 25-20).

UIndy led in the early going in set one until a pair of Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, KS/Lawrence Free State) kills put the Miners on top for the first time at 7-6. The Greyhounds retook the lead 12-9 before S&T battled back again to tie the set at 12 behind kills from Abigail Widiker (Hammond, WI/Saint Croix Central) and Jordan Burton (Olathe, KS/Olathe South). Again Indianapolis was able to regain the lead as the set progressed. S&T was able to get within one in the late going on several occasions but were unable to regain the lead falling 25-23 in the first set.

A Widiker ace set the tone early for S&T, as they scored first and five of the first six to lead in the early going of set two. UIndy managed to prevent the lead from getting out of hand as the two sides went back-and-forth, exchanging the lead several times before the Greyhounds went ahead 17-13 behind a 4-0 run. The Miners rallied to retake the lead 18-17 getting kills from Gannaway, Widiker and Kiernan O'Boyle (Kansas City, MO/St. Teresa's Academy). But again, Indianapolis stayed in the action, retaking the lead once more and fending off late pushes from the Green & Gold to take another 25-23 win.

The Greyhounds got on the board first in set three and never trailed in what became the final set of the afternoon. UIndy led by as much as seven at one point at 16-9. S&T tried to get back into the set, led by Gannaway and Widiker but only managed to get within three points, as Indianapolis wrapped up the set with a 25-20 win to take the match in straight sets.

Gannaway led S&T with 12 kills while Burton, Ply and Widiker each had seven. Hannah Merjil (Bakersfield, CA/Garces Memorial) recorded 27 assists while Meiko Pearson (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley Northwest) posted a team-high 16 digs.

The Miners next make the trip west to the Kansas City area, with their first stop in Liberty Friday evening November 5 against William Jewell. S&T defeated the Cardinals 3-1 in Gibson Arena on October 2.
