ROLLA, Mo. – Facing a team that entered the final weekend of the Great Lakes Valley Conference men's soccer season with hopes of getting a piece of the league's regular season title, Missouri S&T spoiled those plans Friday night by putting together one of its best all-around performance of the year in a 2-0 victory over Illinois Springfield at a damp Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
Despite being outshot in the game by a 14-10 margin, the Miners had answers for every UIS scoring chance, which included two key team saves along the way and also got goals in each half to put an end to an eight-game winless streak.
The Prairie Stars (10-4-1, 9-2-1 GLVC) had a golden scoring chance in the sixth minute of play, but
Nicholas Sikora (Highland, IL/Highland) slid across the box and prevented a goal by Drew Keller. S&T then grabbed the advantage in the 20
th minute when
Luan Barbosa (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio SESI) got the ball outside the box and after getting knocked off balance momentarily by a UIS defender, hit a shot into the far corner past goalkeeper Pijus Petkevicius.
S&T (6-7-2, 5-6-2 GLVC) took that lead into the intermission, then got another key play from its defense in the 75
th minute to stay in front. Lars Brinkman hit a shot in a crowd that hit off a couple of Miners and was then cleared off the goal line by Barbosa to keep the shutout intact.
Just over a minute later, the Miners got their second goal when
Sigurd Semlitsch (Oslo, Norway/Stabekk Videregaaende Skole) got to a rebound off a shot by
Dario Rossell (Madrid, Spain/IES Lazaro Cardenas) that was stopped and hit it into the far corner to make it 2-0.
The Miner defense and goalkeeper
Michael Sallee (Springfield, MO/Catholic) finished off the shutout; he was credited with three saves, all of them coming in the second half.
The win was the third straight for the Miners over UIS and all three have ended in shutouts.
Missouri S&T will close its 2021 regular season Sunday when it hosts Lewis at 2:30 p.m. at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
