ROLLA, Mo. -- The top two offensive teams, statistically speaking, in the Great Lakes Valley Conference face off at Allgood-Bailey Stadium Saturday afternoon as Missouri S&T hosts Indianapolis on First Responders and Health Care Workers Day. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. and all area health care workers and first responders (law enforcement, fire fighters, ambulance personnel and central emergency communications personnel) will be admitted free of charge.
The Miners are looking to win for the third straight time as they got back to the .500 mark a week ago with a thrilling 37-31 win at McKendree.
Gideon Niboh (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell), who rushed for a career-high 173 yards, scored the go-ahead touchdown with 1:40 remaining and the S&T defense held on two occasions down the stretch, including forcing an incompletion in the end zone on the final play of the game.
The Miners rushed for 257 yards in the game and have averaged 181 on the ground this season among their 446.4 total yards per contest, the second-best mark in the GLVC.
Aaron Moya (Canutillo, TX/Canutillo) leads S&T with 504 yards on the year, while
Payton McAlister (Decatur, TX/Decatur) has rushed for 326 yards and Niboh for 315.
Luke Hertzler (St. Louis, MO/Parkway North), who got the start at quarterback last week, has completed 72-of-113 passes (63.7 percent) for 953 yards and nine touchdowns.
Breon Michel (Colorado Springs, CO/Vista Ridge) is second in the conference in receptions with 47, but leads the GLVC with 839 receiving yards and has made 11 touchdown catches. Last week, however, it was
Josh Brown (Gainesville, FL/North Marion HS) who had a big game at McKendree as he caught six passes for 95 yards and had a 54-yard scoring reception.
Defensively,
Ben Straatmann (Washington, MO/Washington) continues to lead the Miners in tackles with 63, as well as the GLVC in tackles for a loss with 16 and quarterback sacks with 10.
Cameron Clemons (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran North), the reigning GLVC Defensive Player of the Week, has a league-high 11 pass breakups and intercepted a pass that set up the Miners' winning touchdown last week.
ABOUT INDIANAPOLIS: The Greyhounds enter the contest at 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the GLVC -- their conference loss came on Oct. 16 to league leader Lindenwood -- but have steamrolled the rest of the competition in conference play. UIndy is averaging 40.8 points per game on the year, but 56 in its four GLVC games and has cleared the 70-point mark twice, including last week's 70-21 win at Quincy.
Much of the UIndy offensive attack is centered around running back Toriano Clinton, who leads NCAA Division II in rushing with 1,521 yards and has scored 17 touchdowns, the third-most in the nation on the ground. Clinton had 234 yards in Saturday's win and has gone over 200 in four different games this year, including a GLVC-record 289 yards in a victory over McKendree. He is closing in on the GLVC record of 1,739 yards set by Southwest Baptist's Bubba Jenkins in 2016.
Quarterback Bryce Stancombe guides the GLVC's top-ranked offense, which is averaging 473.8 yards per game, as he has completed 122-of-200 passes (61 percent) for 1,560 yards and 13 touchdowns, His leading target has been Alonzo Derrick with 23 catches for 388 yards and four scores, while Frank Bentley has also caught 23 passes for 261 yards.
UIndy's defense, which ranks at the top of the GLVC as well as it has allowed just 319 yards per game, is paced by linebacker Kiave' Guerrier with 61 tackles and 11.5 stops behind the line of scrimmage. Gavin Bane has been in on 53 stops and Kyle Borske has a team-high five sacks. Bane and Kasyus Kurns have two interceptions apiece among the eight made by UIndy.
