LEBANON, Ill. – Competing for the second day in succession, Missouri S&T's swimming team split a pair of dual meets Saturday afternoon as they defeated Delta State for the second time in as many days by the score of 182-112, but lost to host McKendree 179-81.
The Miners won the final event of the meet, the 200-yard freestyle relay, as the quartet of
Nolan Fergus (Aurora, IL/Marmion Academy), Gabe Asevedo, Josh Umrysh and
Nate Baxter (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles North) won the race in a time of 1:25.71; Baxter had a closing leg of 21.47 seconds over the final 50 yards to clinch the win.
S&T got second place performances from
Noah Clancy (Alton, IL/Alton) in the 100-yard backstroke in 50.69 seconds, Umrysh in the 100-yard breaststroke in 57.50 seconds, Fergus in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:53.94 and
Marcelo Busch (Sao Centrano Do Sui-Sp, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu) in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:42.79. S&T's 200-yard medley relay team of Clancy, Umrysh, Baxter and Fergus also finished second with a time of 1:32.27.
Martin Melinder (Upplands Vasby, Sweden) finished third in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:49.98, while Busch was fourth in that event in 9:50.29.
Mark Cavanaugh (Papillion, NE/Papillion-LaVista) also took third in the 200-backstroke in a time of 1:58.37 as did
Andy Huffman (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit) n the 400-yard individual medley in 4:12.56, where Melinder finished fourth in 4:14.47 and
Jay Mercer (Kansas City, MO/Whitefield Academy) took fifth in 4:15.06.
Baxter had a fourth place finish in the 200-butterfly in 1:55.76, as did Asevedo in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.67 seconds and Huffman in the 200-breaststroke in 2:09.09.
The Miners had several fifth place finishes, which came from
Connor Wiedemeier (West Monroe, LA/West Monroe) in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.84,
Aidan Walters (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) in the 100-backstroke in 53.11 seconds, Mercer in the 100-yard breaststroke in 59.09 seconds and 200-breaststroke in 2:09.52,
Andy Huffman (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit) in the 200-butterfly in 1:55.83, Clancy in the 50-free in 21.77 seconds, Fergus in the 100-butterfly in 51.19 seconds and Asevedo in 47.44 seconds in the 100-freestyle.
Missouri S&T's next competition will take place on Nov. 5 and 6 at Missouri State in Springfield.
