Miners break scoreless drought, but fall on own goal in overtime

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team ended a lengthy scoring drought Friday, but was unable to hang onto the advantage the goal provided it and ended up on the short end of the score due to an own goal in overtime that gave McKendree a 2-1 win over the Miners at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

McKendree (7-2-3, 7-2-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference) won the game in the 97th minute when Raul Artega's shot in the direction of the net ricocheted off an S&T defender in front and went in for the decisive goal.  The loss extended the Miners' winless streak to five games and dropped them to 5-5-1 overall and 4-4-1 in GLVC play.

The Miners had not scored in the first four games of the skid and the string of minutes without a goal had reached 449 before it was snapped in the 68th minute to break the scoreless deadlock.  The Miners were awarded a penalty kick following a dangerous play in the box by the Bearcats and Luan Barbosa (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio SESI) converted the opportunity to put S&T in front.

That lead held up until the 79th minute when Gonzalo Correa hit a shot from the wing that got past S&T goalkeeper Michael Sallee (Springfield, MO/Catholic) and went inside the far post to even the contest.

The Bearcats outshot the Miners 13-6 in the game and had the only shot in overtime, which was turned away by Sallee for the last of his three saves on the night.  S&T's best scoring chance after the game was tied came when it got a corner kick opportunity late in the second half, but the Miners were unable to get a shot out of it.

Barbosa, Sigurd Semlitsch (Oslo, Norway/Stabekk Videregaaende Skole) and Shane Cairns (North Olmstead, OH/North Olmstead) all had two shots apiece for the Miners, with both of Semitsch's shots being on goal.

The Miners host Missouri-St. Louis Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Allgood-Bailey Stadium. Prior to Sunday's game, the Miners' 2011 team that won a share of the GLVC regular season championship and reached the championship game of the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional will be honored.
