Own goal dooms Miners in loss to No. 14 Maryville

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team came up short Sunday afternoon, as it fell victim to an own goal for the only tally in the contest in a 1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference setback to 14th-ranked Maryville.

After a scoreless first half of play, the Saints got their goal when a cross was sent in front of the Miner net and after going off one player, the ball hit off another S&T player defending in front and got redirected past Miner goalkeeper Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central).

The Miners (5-4-1, 4-3-1 GLVC), who were outshot 17-8 in the contest, had two shots on net in the second half as Derek Schlenker (Chandler, AZ/Hamilton) had a long shot stopped by Maryville goalkeeper Nick Hemann turned away in the 65th minute and Brandon Bunger (Williamsville, IL/Williamsville) had a chance in the 73rd minute from just inside the box.  Leyton Harper (Andover, KS/Central) also had a good chance in the 72nd minute when he got free down the left side of the box, but hit the shot wide.

Missouri S&T will return home for a weekend homestand next week, beginning with a Friday match with McKendree at 7:30 p.m.
