Miners head to Rockhurst Wednesday for GLVC tilt

1/5/2021 2:27:00 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's basketball team heads to the road for the first time in the 2021 calendar year on Wednesday as the Miners will face Rockhurst in a 5 p.m. Great Lakes Valley Conference contest in Kansas City, Mo.

The game was originally scheduled for Jan. 21, but the teams mutually agreed to move the game ahead on the calendar with both squads having open midweek dates and will complete their season series on Wednesday.  The Hawks edged the Miners 83-81 in Rolla on Dec. 5.

The Miners come into Wednesday's contest at 2-6 overall after falling 84-78 to Illinois Springfield on Sunday at Gibson Arena.  S&T held a nine-point lead with 10 minutes remaining and still led by seven with just under six minutes left, but was unable to hold off the Prairie Stars' late surge.

Kevin Legardy (Las Vegas, NV/Canyon Springs) scored a career-high 24 points to lead the Miners in the loss and he enters Wednesday's game as S&T's second-leading scorer with an average of 15.3 points per game.  The Miners' top scorer on the season is Julien Smith (Fort Worth, TX/Northwest), who ranks seventh in the GLVC in scoring with his mark of 18.4 points per contest and had 19 in Sunday's game.  Smith leads the GLVC with 23 three-point baskets and is shooting 38.3 percent from beyond the arc on the year.

Mitch Fairless (St. Charles, MO/Duchesne) is also in double figures with an average of 14.8 points per game, while Kaden Froebe (Lincoln, IL/Lincoln), who scored 13 on Sunday, leads the GLVC in steals with 23 and is fifth in assists per game; he has recorded a team-high 39 on the year.

ABOUT ROCKHURST: The Hawks come into Wednesday's game looking to snap a three-game losing streak, a string that began after their win over the Miners in Rolla last month.  Rockhurst, 3-4 on the season, resumed play Sunday by shooting just 28 percent from the field and hitting just two-of-25 from three-point range in a 73-47 home loss to Lewis.

Chris Hamil leads the Hawks in scoring with an average of 15.4 points per game and is one of three Rockhurst players averaging in double figures on the season.  Curtis Lewis, who scored a career-high 33 points in the Hawks' 83-81 win over the Miners on Dec. 5, is averaging 14.6 points per contest and is shooting 39.4 percent from three-point range with a team-best 20 assists.

Quinton Curry is the third double figure scorer for the Hawks at 10.6 points per game and is pulling down 6.6 rebounds per outing, just shy of the 6.7 by Nick Volz that leads the team.  Volz is just short of the double figure mark in the scoring column at 9.9 points per game.  The Hawks did not have a single player score in double figures in Sunday's loss.
