Miners take two from Peacocks to complete series sweep

ROLLA, Mo. – After rallying from an early deficit to win game one of Sunday's doubleheader with Upper Iowa, Missouri S&T's baseball team took the second game of the twinbill to complete a sweep of the four-game series, winning Sunday's contests by scores of 7-6 and 11-5.

The Miners (5-7) fell behind 3-0 in the opener on home runs by Jack Thode and Conner Klostermann, but overcame that early deficit with a four-run outburst in the third.  S&T loaded the bases on two walks and a bunt single, then Will Hayes (Terre Haute, IN/South Vigo) laced a triple into the left field corner to clear the bases and tie the game.  Moments later, Hayes would score the go-ahead run on a groundout by Doug Wood (Liberty, MO/Liberty North).

After the Peacocks (1-7) tied the game in the fourth, S&T regained the lead in the bottom of the inning when Tate Morrell (Lloydminster, AB) hit a two-run homer to the opposite field.  The Miners then got what turned out to be the decisive run in the fifth when Keegan Baxmeyer (Waterloo, IL/Freeburg) reached on a wild pitch on a strikeout and later scored on a hit by Matt Miller (St. Louis, MO/Oakville).

The Miners needed those runs as Upper Iowa scored twice in the seventh before David Kephart (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley Northwest) – who got the win in relief – got Hogan Penny on a grounder to first with the tying run at second.

S&T was outhit 7-5 in the opener, but benefitted from five walks and two hit batters to win the contest.

The Miners had fallen behind in the early innings in each of the first three games of the series, but wasted little time in grabbing the lead in the series finale as they took advantage of some sloppy play by the Peacocks over the first five innings.

S&T scored three unearned runs in the first, which were driven in by Miller, Cole Hampton (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) and Landon Bell (Seymour, MO/Seymour), then tallied two more unearned runs in the second thanks to a pair of Peacock errors.  After Upper Iowa got two runs back in the third, the Miners broke the game open by getting those two runs back in the fourth and putting four more on the scoreboard an inning later.

The first run in the fourth came when Michael Ward (Hazelwood, MO/Hazelwood West) scored on a throwing error on a stolen base, then Morrell drove in the second run of the inning.  In the fifth, Hayes drove in two with a double down the left field line, then Ward and Baxmeyer drove in runs later in the frame as Upper Iowa used four of their seven pitchers in the contest in that inning.

Baxmeyer and Bell had three hits apiece as S&T outhit the Peacocks 13-7 in the second game.  Matthew Lamb (Doniphan, NE/Grand Island) threw the first six innings and struck out five to pick up the win on the mound, while Andrew Saunders (St. Louis, MO/Ladue Horton Watkins) allowed just two hits over the final three innings to get a save.

Missouri S&T opens its Great Lakes Valley Conference season next weekend when it takes on Rockhurst in a three-game series in Kansas City, Mo.
