ROLLA, Mo. – Few teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference have had success in slowing down Truman State's Brodric Thomas this season and Missouri S&T became the latest team to struggle with containing the league's second-leading scorer, as Thomas racked up 34 points to pace the Bulldogs to an 89-67 win over S&T Saturday afternoon at Gibson Arena.
Thomas did the bulk of his damage from three-point range – making seven of his eight attempts from beyond the arc – and fell one point short of his career high as he led the Bulldogs to a win that gave them a share of the GLVC's regular season title. The loss ended the season for the Miners with a final record of 6-20 and a 4-16 mark in conference play.
Truman (20-8, 16-4 GLVC) jumped out to an 8-0 lead to start the contest before the Miners began climbing back into the game, as S&T used an 8-2 run that was capped by a
CJ Hedgepeth (Evansville, IN/Harrison) three-pointer to cut the lead to one at 14-13. The Bulldogs answered back, however, by outscoring the Miners 11-2 over the next 2:23 to extend their lead to 10.
The Bulldogs maintained a lead near or just above the double figure mark for the remainder of the first half and finished the period with a 38-27 advantage, then scored the first seven points of the second half and led by as much as 28 in the contest.
S&T shot only 32.8 percent in the game and made nine-of-26 from three-point range in its final contest of the season. Hedgepeth, one of the four Missouri S&T seniors, was the only Miner in double figures as he finished with 27 points that included five of the nine three-pointers.
Two other S&T seniors,
Owen Kolberg (Lee's Summit, MO/Libby Lane Academy) and
Jacob Bergman (Sedalia, MO/Smith-Cotton), started the game for the Miners while the fourth,
Dulan Scott (Chicago, IL/Farragut Academy), missed the game due to an injury suffered in a game last week. Scott led the Miners in scoring during the 2019-20 season with an average of 15.7 points per game, while Hedgepeth averaged 13.2 points a game during the campaign and led S&T with 68 assists and 39 steals.
