ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's baseball team got back into the win column on Saturday afternoon, snapping a six-game losing streak with a pair of come-from-behind wins over Upper Iowa at the S&T Ballpark.
The Miners overcame an early 2-0 deficit to win game one 7-2 behind a complete game performance on the mound from
Cade Meier (Dakota, IL/Dakota), then made up a four-run difference in game two and used a six-run eighth inning to complete the sweep with a 13-7 victory.
Upper Iowa (1-5) scored single runs in each of the first two innings off Meier, but the Miners (3-7) tied the score in the third when
Michael Ward (Hazelwood, MO/Hazelwood West) followed a walk to
Doug Wood (Liberty, MO/Liberty North) by belting a game-tying home run. Wood also drew a walk to open a fifth inning uprising that led to the Miners scoring three times to take the lead.
Following the walk to Wood in the fifth, Ward blooped a single down the line in right and
Keegan Baxmeyer (Waterloo, IL/Freeburg) drew a walk to load the bases.
Matt Miller (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) hit a ground ball to short, but a throw to third was wild, allowing two runs to score to put S&T in front.
The Miners got another run before the inning ended on a bunt single by
AJ Marsh (High Ridge, MO/Seckman) that plated Baxmeyer.
S&T pushed two more runs across in the sixth – one scoring on an error and the other on an RBI single by Marsh – to back Meier's work on the mound as he settled in after the first two innings. Meier allowed only three hits over the final five innings and had five of his seven strikeouts during that span as he picked up his first win of the season.
The Miners outhit the Peacocks 10-8, with Ward getting three hits for S&T.
Upper Iowa jumped out in front again in game two with a four-run second inning, but the Miners began chipping away at the lead in the bottom of the second when
Matt Miller (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) led off with a double and came home on
Braden Mahurin's (Dixon, MO/Dixon) one-out single. S&T got another run in the fourth when
Aaron Berkhoff (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain) singled home
Tate Morrell (Lloydminster, AB), then the Miners tied the game in the fifth on an RBI hit by Morrell and a sacrifice fly by Mahurin.
The Miners got their first lead of the game in the sixth as they put up three runs against four Peacock pitchers. S&T loaded the bases with one out and Baxmeyer laced a single into left to score Marsh and
Will Hayes (Terre Haute, IN/South Vigo). Morrell drove in the third run of the inning with an infield out.
The Peacocks tied the game with three runs in the eighth, but S&T responded by sending 10 men to the plate in their six-run eighth to win the nightcap. The inning started with a double by Wood, then a hit batter, a wild pitch and intentional walk loaded the bases. A wild pitch scored Wood with the go-ahead run, then Miller blooped a single over a drawn-in infield to score two.
Morrell followed with a double that brought home Miller, then S&T added two more runs in the inning on an RBI single by Berkhoff, who would later score himself on a wild pitch to close the scoring.
Joe Wolf (Freeburg, IL/Freeburg) picked up the win in relief for the Miners as he got the final out of the eighth to keep the game tied prior to S&T's uprising in the bottom half of the frame. The Miners outhit the Peacocks 14-6 in game two, paced by three hits apiece by Miller and Morrell.
