ROLLA, MO- The Miners faced a hefty set-back today, offense going cold in the second half of their game against the Greyhounds of Indianapolis and facing the 90-75 loss.
Both S&T and UIndy opened the game trading baskets, finding themselves tied at 13 each with 5:29 left in the opening quarter. Back-to-back baskets from
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) and
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) would give the Miners the push they needed to put them up by five.
Three consecutive baskets from
Tristen McFeders (Kansas City, Mo./Bishop Miege),
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones), and
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) at the end of the quarter put the Miners up 28-18 and set them up to continue their success in the second quarter.
S&T did just that, holding the Greyhounds to just 35% from the field and getting five missed free-throws from UIndy to help.
The Miners stuck it to the Greyhounds in the second quarter, gaining their largest lead of 22 after
Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) sank one of her 3 three-pointers with just over four minutes left in the half. While Indianapolis fought their way back to make their deficit under 20, S&T's offense held steady and found themselves with a 51-35 lead.
The second half of play was a completely different story; after the Miners couldn't miss for the first 20 minutes and scored 51 points, they were held to just 24 in the last 20 minutes and shooting just 26% from the field.
UIndy opened the third quarter on an 11-2 run to get back within 10 of the Miners. They would score on five consecutive trips down the floor to take their first lead of the game since the opening quarter of play. The duo of Laura Thomas and Marissa Knobloch drained a combined five three-pointers in the third to put S&T down 70-61 heading into the final 10 minutes.
It was all Indianapolis in the final stanza of play, holding the Miners to less than 30% from the field. A lay-up from UIndy's Paige Barrett at the end of the game would give the Greyhounds their largest lead of the game, and eventually hand the Miners the 90-75 loss.
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) led the way for the Miners offensively, scoring a team-high 15 points on 6-9 shooting.
Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic),
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township), and
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) all reached double-digits in scoring while
Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) led the way with a game-high 10 rebounds.
As a team, Missouri S&T (7-18, 3-15 GLVC) finished the game shooting 40% from the field and 52% from beyond the arc.
