ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's baseball team was hit by an early flurry of runs by Davenport in both games of Saturday's doubleheader at the S&T Ballpark, as the visiting Panthers beat the Miners 15-5 in game one and 10-7 in the nightcap.
Davenport (4-1) took advantage of seven walks and a hit batter issued by S&T pitching in the first two innings of the opener, building a 7-0 lead despite having only three hits during that span. The Panthers scored three in the first, then added four more in the second.
The Panthers would extend their lead to 12-0 after five and one-half innings before the Miners (1-5) put five runs on the board in the sixth. After Dalton O'Boyle shut out S&T on three hits over the first five innings, S&T got to the bullpen in the sixth starting with a leadoff single by
Will Hayes (Terre Haute, IN/South Vigo).
A walk and a hit loaded the bases, then
Keegan Baxmeyer (Waterloo, IL/Freeburg) hit into a fielder's choice to score the first run of the inning.
Matt Miller (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) was hit by a pitch to load the bases again before
Aaron Berkhoff (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain) singled through the right side of the infield to score two; an additional run scored on a subsequent throwing error on the play.
S&T scored its fifth run of the inning when Berkhoff crossed the plate on a groundout by
Dakota Sill (Lansing, KS/Lansing).
The Miners were outhit 13-7 in the opener, with Hayes and
Landon Bell (Seymour, MO/Seymour) getting two hits apiece. Starting pitcher
Bryce Charipar (Cedar Rapids, IA/Xavier) was tagged with the loss.
Davenport had another quick start in game two as it jumped on S&T starter
Brenden Garza (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt South) for two runs in the second and knocked him out of the game in the midst of a four-run third. The Panthers would add another run in the fifth before the Miners got on the scoreboard in the fifth when Hayes singled home
Tate Morrell (Lloydminster, AB).
S&T's offense began to come to life in the later innings again, as the Miners scored twice in the seventh and four in the eighth to get to within three.
In the seventh, the Miners got back-to-back hits by Morrell and Berkhoff to start the frame, then a one-out single by
Braden Mahurin (Dixon, MO/Dixon) loaded the bases.
Doug Wood (Liberty, MO/Liberty North) reached on a throwing error with two outs to score the two runs.
Sill began the eighth by being hit by a pitch, then walks to Morrell and Berkhoff loaded the bases. Bell hit into a fielder's choice to plate the first run, then Mahurin reached on an infield hit and a throwing error that followed scored Berkhoff. A passed ball scored the third run of the inning, then Wood drove in a run on a ball to the right side to complete the scoring in the inning.
The Miners and Panthers will wrap up their four-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday that begins at 11 a.m.
