ROLLA, MO- Looking to break the eight game losing streak, the Miners hosted the Lady Knights of Bellarmine University tonight. Offensive woes from S&T kept them from defeating BU and forced the Miners into an 80-58 loss.
S&T started strong in the opening quarter, shooting 40% from the field and keeping it a close game.
The Lady Knights and Miners went back and forth in scoring; neither team able to get more than a three point lead in the first 10 minutes. Back-to-back lay-ups from
Tristen McFeders (Kansas City, Mo./Bishop Miege) late in the quarter put S&T up 14-11. BU's Tasia Jefferies would add in a lay-up and a three-point basket before the buzzer to put Bellarmine up 16-14.
BU opened up shop in the second quarter, opening the quarter on a 9-2 run to extend their lead out to seven. Bellarmine would finish out the half with four consecutive baskets to put the Miners down 36-24.
The Miners fought tooth-and-nail to get back in the game in the third quarter; a three-pointer from
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) with 4:41 left in the third would get the Miners within eight of the Lady Knights. BU would, once again, extend their lead back out to double-digits.
A three-pointer from
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) in the opposite corner just before the buzzer put the Miners down 57-43 heading into the final quarter of play.
It was all Bellarmine in the fourth quarter, pushing their lead out to as much as 27 before take the 80-58 win.
Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) led the way for the Miners with 14 points and nine rebounds while
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) chipped in 13 points on 6-11 shooting.
As a team, Missouri S&T (7-17, 3-14 GLVC) finished the game shooting 37% from the field and 33% from behind the arc.
The Miners will be back in Gibson Arena this Saturday when they play host to the Greyhounds of Indianapolis.
