S&T wins suspended game, but drops pair of one-run decisions

ROLLA, Mo. – After getting the final three outs to wrap up a suspended game and pick up its first win of the season, Missouri S&T's baseball team fell a run short in both games of Sunday's doubleheader with Minot State as the Beavers swept the twinbill by scores of 5-4 and 4-3.

In the first full game on Sunday, sloppy play led to the Miners falling behind in the early innings, as the Beavers scored a run in the first and two in the second after S&T had tied the score in its half of the first on Matt Miller's (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) sacrifice fly.  The first Minot State run in the second scored as the result of an error and the second runner that scored reached on a wild pitch following a strikeout.

S&T got a run back in the third when Doug Wood (Liberty, MO/Liberty North) walked with one out and later scored on a hit by Miller, but the Beavers tacked on two more unearned runs in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead.  The Miners cut the lead to 5-3 in the fifth when Michael Ward (Hazelwood, MO/Hazelwood West) singled in Will Hayes (Terre Haute, IN/South Vigo), then they mounted a rally effort in the seventh with a chance to tie or win the game after loading the bases with nobody out on two hits and a walk.

One run scored when Wood hit into a fielder's choice, but MSU's Blake Gallagher induced a double play ball to escape the jam and end the contest.

Brady Voss (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty) had two of S&T's seven hits, as the Miners were outhit 8-7 in game one.  Starting pitcher Cade Meier (Dakota, IL/Dakota), who threw the final inning of the suspended game that preceded the contest, took the loss on the hill for the Miners.

Sunday's nightcap saw the Beavers take the initial lead on Jackson Pokorney's two-run homer off Matthew Lamb (Doniphan, NE/Grand Island) in the third, but the Miners answered back with two in the bottom half of the frame to knot the score.  The first run scored when Ward hit into a fielder's choice and a throwing error on the play allowed Hayes to score.  Moments later, Wood scored on a double play ball to even the count.

The Miners took the lead in the fifth when Hayes led off with a hit and reached second on a wild pickoff attempt.  After he was bunted over to third, Hayes came across the plate after the ball got away when Ward struck out on a pitch in the dirt that rolled away from the catcher.

Minot State tied the score in the seventh on a Pokorney sacrifice fly, then took the lead in the ninth on a one-out RBI single by Gallagher that brought in Ryley Humringhouse.  Gallagher would then take the mound again in the bottom of the ninth after AJ Marsh's (High Ridge, MO/Seckman) pinch-hit single to start the inning and aided by a caught stealing, was able to pick up his second save of the afternoon despite having the tying and winning runs on base.

Hayes and Keegan Baxmeyer (Waterloo, IL/Freeburg) had two hits apiece for the Miners, but S&T was outhit in the second game 8-6.  Jack DeGarmo (Liberty, MO/Liberty North), the fourth of five pitchers used by S&T in the nightcap, suffered the decision.

In the completion of the suspended game that the Miners won 8-2, Meier allowed a leadoff walk but picked that runner off before fanning the next two to finish the contest.  The Miners outhit the Beavers in the game 8-5 as Brenden Garza (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt South), who had a solid five-inning performance in a starting spot on the mound, got the win.

Baxmeyer had three hits in the victory for the Miners and Braden Mahurin (Dixon, MO/Dixon) added two.

The Miners' next action will take place next weekend when they host Davenport in a four-game series at the S&T Ballpark.
