ROMEOVILLE, ILL.- On the last leg of their travel schedule for the year, the Miners faced off against the Flyers of Lewis University. Despite their epic comeback, S&T faced the 71-63 loss.
Lewis took control of the game in the opening quarter, taking a 23-10 lead after 10 minutes of play.
S&T held their own with the Flyers in the second quarter, matching them shot-for-shot. After fighting their way back to a 10 point deficit, back-to-back three-pointers from
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) and
Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) made it a 36-32 game. Lewis would add in seven straight points before the buzzer to extend their lead back out to 11 heading into the break.
The Miners made it interesting in the second half, staying within reaching distance of the Flyers.
Four times in the third quarter, S&T got back within five points of Lewis. Rachel Hinders would push LU's lead back out to 10 before the end of the quarter after she sank two free-throws and knocked down a three-pointer to make it a 59-49 game.
While the Miners, once again, matched the Flyers in scoring throughout the fourth quarter, Lewis' lead from earlier in the game would give them the edge.
Back-to-back three-pointer from
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) would put S&T down by eight with 46 seconds left in the game, but the Miners would not be able to get any closer as they Flyers went on to hold out for the 71-63 win.
Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) led the way for the Miners tonight with her 13
th double-double of the season of 18 points and 16 rebounds while
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) added in 16 points while shooting 4-8 from behind the arc.
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) was the final S&T player to reach double figures tonight adding in 10 points while shooting 4-5 from the field and 2-3 from long range.
As a team, Missouri S&T (7-16, 3-13 GLVC) finished the game shooting 43% from the field and 34 % from three-point range.
