Box Score 2 NASHVILLE, TN- The Miner softball team kicked off their 2020 season today, taking on Davenport and Trevecca Nazarene in a round-robin series. S&T saw some struggles in the opening games, taking the 3-1 loss to Davenport and an 11-0 loss of Trevecca Nazarene.
MISSOURI S&T: 1, DAVENPORT: 3
The Miners opened up the game on a high note; lead-off hitter
Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) took her first base of the season on a HBP. She would easily make her way around bases off a wild pitch and a sac-fly to centerfield from
Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy).
S&T would get their first run of the season on a double steal situation with
Olivia Young (Millstadt, IL/Belleville Township) and Klein. While Young stole second, Klein would make her way home and give the Miners a 1-0 lead.
The Miners would hold their lead until the bottom of the 4
th inning when Davenport's Briana Allen singled to centerfield and drove in Alexis Koza. DU would add in two more runs in the bottom half of the 5
th after Selene Pauley hit a two run homerun over the centerfield fence to extend their lead out to 3-1.
S&T would see chances in the top of the 6
th and 7
th innings to score, but was unable to connect.
In the top of the 6
th,
Shannon Flowers (Katy, Texas/Katy) would reach on a fielder's choice to give the Miners a baserunner.
Hannah Smith (Oconomowoc, WI/Catholic Memorial) would draw a walk to put S&T in scoring position;
Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) would get her first hit of the season off a single through the right side to load the bases for
Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley). Klein would not be able to put the ball in play and would hold the Miners at a 3-1 deficit.
Marcy McCalla (Staunton, IL/Staunton) would be the lone Miner to reach first in the top of the 7
th as the defense of the Panthers held strong to take the 3-1 game.
Along with Klein, Smith, and Baxter,
Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson) picked up a hit in the game.
MISSOURI S&T: 0, TREVECCA NAZARENE: 11
It was a much different story in the Miners second game of the day; S&T picked up just two hits to TNU's 11 and committed four errors.
Olivia Young (Millstadt, IL/Belleville Township) got the first hit of the game for the Miners in the top of the 1
st with a single up the middle. S&T would not get another baserunner until the top of the 3
rd after
Emily Davidson (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) drew a walk and
Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) singled through the right side.
TNU opened their offensive up in the bottom of the 4
th with eight runs on six hits. Those eight runs would be enough to take the 11-0 win and move the Miners to 0-2 for the season.
