BOLIVAR, MO- The Miners continued GLVC play today at Southwest Baptist University. While the Miners hung with the Bearcats for the majority of the game, SBU came out on top with the 74-62 win.
S&T held SBU scoreless for the opening two minutes of the game after
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) drained her first three of the game just 47 seconds in.
Southwest Baptist made their comeback and took the lead with nine points on four consecutive trips down the floor. With just enough of a lead, the Bearcats maintained their lead through the first quarter after Alexus Johnson hit a three-pointer to make it a 22-16 game.
The Miners cut their deficit in the second quarter, thanks in part to nine points from behind the arc from
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) and
Kristin Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster CHristian Academy).
While S&T would not be able to regain their lead, four consecutive made free-throws from
Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) and
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) got them within one of Southwest Baptist with 5:45 left in the half.
SBU would push their lead out to as much as nine before the break, but the duo of Rodriguez and Keys sparked the Miners offense just before the buzzer and put S&T down 35-31.
The Miners and Bearcats traded baskets to open the second half with
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) and
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) finding their shooting and combining for 14 of the teams 17 points in the third.
Much like the second quarter, the Miners fought their way back to within one of Southwest Baptist;
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) got an open transition lay-up while
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) completed a three-point play to make it 46-45.
The Bearcats offense got the push it needed just before the end of the third quarter. SBU went on a 7-0 run late in the quarter that gave them a 53-45 lead.
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) would drain a three from the opposite corner just before the buzzer to put the Miners down five heading into the final 10 minutes.
An explosive offensive surge from SBU in the fourth quarter would hold the Miners to no made three-pointers in the final stanza and just 35% shooting from the floor. Three made free-throws from Southwest Baptist in the final seconds of the game would seal the deal and hand S&T the 74-62 loss.
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) led the way for the Miners today, picking up a double-double with 17 points, 15 of them coming in the second half, and 10 rebounds while
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) and
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) each added in 12 points.
Both Kerr and
Kristin Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster CHristian Academy) had notable performances on the defensive end of the court today; Kerr and Keys recorded four blocks during the game while the team came away with 10 for the game.
Missouri S&T (7-12, 3-9 GLVC) finished the game shooting 37% from the field and 30% from three-point range. Along with their 10 blocks, the Miners forced the Bearcats into 14 turnovers.
