Throughout the history of Missouri S&T athletics, a number of student-athletes have stood out in their programs and many of them have been enshrined in the Miner Athletics Hall of Fame. A number of them – particularly from the early days of athletics at the university – made their marks in more than one sport.
The third article in this series will take a look at some of those Miner student-athletes that are Hall of Fame members that were standout performers in more than one sport while attending the university.
Harry Bolon (Class of 1929) – Bolon stood out in three sports – football, wrestling and track – in the late 1920s and was offered a professional football contract after completing his collegiate career.
Chris Dawson (Class of 1994) – Dawson started his Miner career on the basketball court, where he scored in double figures in three of his four seasons and earned a pair of All-MIAA awards. After scoring 1,342 points in basketball, Dawson took his talents to the football field in 1993 and earned all-conference honors in that sport as a wide receiver after making 38 receptions for 516 yards.
Stu Dunlop (Class of 1976) – Dunlop earned eight letters in three sports, earning four of them as a football player where he was a three-time all-conference performer. His 139 receptions and 1,823 receiving yards still rank among the top 10 in school history. Dunlop also earned three letters in track & field and an additional one in baseball, earning all-conference honors in that one season on the diamond.
Jackie Kelble (Class of 2001) – Kelble was the first member of the women's track & field program to earn All-America honors after finishing sixth in the javelin throw at the 1999 NCAA Division II Championships; her mark set in that meet of 150-4 still stands as the school record. As a basketball player, Kelble earned all-conference honors while closing her career with 1,098 points and as one of the top free throw shooters in school history.
Gary McAlpin (Class of 1973) – McAlpin was a four-year member of the Miner football and wrestling teams and earned all-conference honors in both sports. In 1972, he was named to the All-MIAA first team in football at guard in a season when he also served as team captain, then followed that a year later by winning the MIAA championship in wrestling in the heavyweight division.
Tamara McCaskill (Class of 2010) – McCaskill stood in two sports at S&T, earning All-America honors in track & field and All-GLVC honors in basketball. McCaskill recorded back-to-back finishes of second and third in the high jump at the NCAA Division II Championships, setting the school record in the process, while also ending her basketball career as the program's all-time leading scorer with 1,525 points. McCaskill earned All-GLVC honors three times in basketball, including first-team laurels in 2008 when the Miners reached the regional championship game.
James McGregor (Class of 1937) – While earning 12 varsity letters, McGregor led the Miner basketball team in scoring in three of his four seasons of play and also broke a trio of school records in track & field as a standout in the sprints and jumping events.
Clint Moss (Class of 2005) – Moss earned five all-conference awards as a Miner, three in baseball and two in football. Moss set several records in baseball, finishing his career with the most hits, runs scored and triples in school history as he batted .321 in his four-year career. On the football field, he caught 116 passes for 1,664 yards and had 95 of those catches over the course of his final two seasons, both ending with all-conference honors.
Herman Pfeifer (Class of 1936) – Pfeifer was one of the few Miner student-athletes to earn letters in four varsity sports and he earned all-conference honors in two of them. Besides playing football and competing in track, Pfeifer was the first Miner to earn first-team All-MIAA honors in basketball following the 1935-36 season. Later that year, he earned medalist honors at the MIAA Golf Championships.
Craig Sorensen (Class of 1995) – Sorensen stood out in two sports as a Miner, particularly in track & field where he finished third in the high jump at the 1994 NCAA Division II Championships. He cleared 6-9 at the national meet after setting the school record with a clearance of 6-10 ¾ earlier in the season on two occasions, one being the prestigious Kansas Relays. A three-time national qualifier, he was a two-time MIAA champion in the event. In football, Sorensen was a four-year letterman led the 1994 Miners in receptions with 29; one of those catches keyed a rally for a late-season victory over Missouri Southern.
Leonard Stout (Class of 1970) – Stout earned all-conference honors in both football and track & field during his time as a Miner. He established the school record in the javelin throw and won two MIAA championships in that event while finishing second in the other two years. In football, Stout was an all-conference performer at defensive end in the 1968 and 1969 seasons.
Craig Thomas (Class of 1984) – Thomas competed in football and baseball as a Miner and earned all-conference laurels in both sports. Thomas, a member of the Miners' undefeated football team in 1980, was a kicker and safety who closed his career with 17 field goals and 11 pass interceptions. In baseball, he was a three-time All-MIAA selection who finished among the all-time Miner leaders in doubles, home runs and runs batted in.
Royce Vessell (Class of 1976) – Vessell was a two-sport standout for the Miners, as he was a member of NCAA Division II Tournament teams with the men's basketball squad and an all-MIAA performer in golf. Vessell was named as the Miners' most valuable player on its first MIAA championship team in 1975-76 and scored over 800 points in his career, then earned all-league honors later that season in golf.
In addition to these standouts, some special mention should also go to some that played in multiple sports, but really made their name in one in particular:
Jennifer Cordes (Class of 1991) – Cordes concluded her playing career on the basketball team with the most points in school history with 1,416, helping her earn All-MIAA and Academic All-America honors. In addition, she played two seasons of softball for the Miners and batted .263 in 1989.
Merle Dillow (Class of 1980) – Dillow stood out at the tight end position for the Miner football team, catching 104 passes for 1,402 yards and 16 touchdowns during his career. He earned All-America honors at the position on the gridiron and also played two seasons of basketball for the Miners.
Kent Dinsdale (Class of 1985) – Dinsdale played on the Miner basketball team for three seasons, but excelled in golf where he was a two-time honorable mention All-America performer and medalist at the 1984 MIAA Championships. A four-time national qualifier, Dinsdale earned a spot to compete in the 1995 PGA Championship.
Mike Joshua (Class of 1975) – Joshua set the school record for career rushing yards with 1,988 over four seasons and earned all-conference honors in that sport. He also earned three letters in track & field where he served as a captain for the Miners.
Denise McMillan (Class of 2000) – McMillan played basketball and soccer for the Miners and excelled on the soccer pitch as she finished her career as one of the most prolific scorers in program history. She scored 42 goals in three seasons and accumulated 97 points and is one of only two players with three seasons with at least 10 goals.
Kurt O'Brien (Class of 1991) – O'Brien competed in the sprints and relays for the track team – and was part of a record-setting relay team along the way – but it was in soccer where he made his mark. He set the school record for career goals with 35 and also tied single-game records with four goals and eight points on his way to leading the MIAA in scoring in 1987. He earned all-conference and all-region honors during his soccer career.
Tyrone Smith (Class of 2007) – Smith, who spent time on the Miner football team, became of the top performers in track & field both in the GLVC and on the international level. After winning five conference championships in the long and triple jump events, Smith has competed in the Olympic Games on three occasions as a member of his native country of Bermuda and reached the long jump finals in London in 2012. Four years later, he was selected to serve as his nation's flag bearer as the Bermuda Olympic team entered the stadium during the opening ceremonies.
