Miners Second Quarter Comeback Not Enough to Stop Lions

12/10/2020 7:44:00 PM

Box Score ST. CHARLES, MO- After digging themselves out of a hole in the first half, S&T's defense could not hold the Lions of Lindenwood (2-2, 2-2 GLVC) and suffered the 87-65 loss.

S&T got off to a slow start, being held to 3-18 from the field in the opening quarter and just nine points over the 10 minute span. The Lions, on the other hand, jumped the gun getting eight points from Julia Ruzevich and seven from Devin Fuhring, who ended up combining for 47 of the Lions 87 points.

The Miners would look at a 20-9 deficit heading into the second quarter.

Things took a major turn in the second quarter for S&T; after getting down by as much as much as 16 points late in the quarter, the Miners went on an 9-2 run with Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones), Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township), and Jada Lindesmith (St. Peters, MO/Lutheran) leading the charge.

Lindesmith kicked things off with a short jumper just outside the paint with 2:51 remaining in the half. Durk would sink both free-throws after she went coast to coast and drew a foul from Lindenwood's Ellen McCorkle.
Durk would do the same thing on the very next possession, drawing a foul from Jamie Bain and draining those two free-throws as well. Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) would add the cherry on top, draining a deep three-pointer from the left wing at the buzzer to put the Miners down seven going into halftime.

S&T cut the Lions lead even more to start the third quarter, getting back-to-back buckets from Rodriguez and Durk and force Lindenwood to call a timeout just 43 seconds into the half.

LU's offense picked up in the third, extending their lead back out to eight after a lay-up from Devin Fuhring put the Miners down 46-38.

The Lions offense would catch fire from there, finishing the second part of the quarter on a 22-8 run to push their lead out to 21 and take a 67-46 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

S&T and LWU would trade baskets in the fourth quarter, but the Miners were not able to make a comeback and faced the 87-65 loss.

Missouri S&T (0-4, 0-4 GLVC) had three players in double figure scoring; Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) led the way for the Miners with 19 points while going 3-5 from long range. Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) and Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) added in 18 and 16 points, respectively, while Kerr picked up a team-high nine rebounds and adding in two blocks.

The Miners will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they host the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist to round out their 2020 home schedule.
