Miners Stunned by UMSL's Late Offensive Surge

ST. LOUIS, MO- Missouri S&T faced a hard setback today, falling 67-56 to the Tritons of Missouri-St. Louis for their second straight GLVC loss.

The Miners fell behind early in the first quarter, looking at a 9-3 deficit less than four minutes into the game. S&T would fight their way back to a tie score thanks to baskets from Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern), Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay), and Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy).

UMSL's offense could not be stopped, the Tritons shooting 50% from the field in the opening 10 minutes and ending the quarter on a 7-0 run to make it a 19-12 game.

S&T had a hard time stopping UMSL's offense to open the second quarter, falling behind by as much as 12.

Once again, the Miners fought their way back into the game with consecutive baskets from Baylor, Raley, and Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic). Tristen McFeders (Kansas City, Mo./Bishop Miege) would get her first points of the game with just 40 seconds left in the half with an open lay-up to put S&T down 32-29 heading into halftime.

The Miners held their own in the third quarter, even taking the lead half way through.

After trading baskets with UMSL, S&T gained their first lead of the game after Raley, Baylor, and Kabetske combined for seven quick points to take a 41-38 lead. It was short lived as the Tritons retook their lead by the end of the quarter with two made free-throws from Faye Meissner to make it a 48-45 game.

UMSL's defense found a spark in the final quarter, holding the Miners to just 11 points while shooting just 27% from the field. Late free-throws would help the Tritons secure their lead as they sunk four in the final two minutes of the game to hand S&T the 67-56 loss.

Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) led all players with 19 points while shooting 50% from the field while Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) picked up her eighth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Baylor also added in a season high four blocks.

As a team, Missouri S&T (5-5, 1-2 GLVC) shot 37% from the field and was held to just four made three-point field goals the entire game.

The Miners will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Truman State and Quincy to continue GLVC play.
