Miners Offense Goes Cold Late As Cardinals Take 88-82 Win

Box Score LIBERTY, MO- A late 7-0 run from William Jewell threatened S&T's lead and proved to be the Miners unraveling as they suffered the 88-82 loss.

The Miners opened the first quarter with a 9-2 run that was capped off with a lay-up from Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) with just under seven minutes to play.

Jewell would get four consecutive free-throws from Ainsley Tolson to put the Cardinals within three of the Miners. S&T's offense would continue to shine for the opening stanza, seeing their lead extend out to 18-10 after Rodriguez got two of her team-high 24 points.

The Cardinals offense would find their late in the quarter; Leah Finn and Rhyann Fisher would get back-to-back baskets just before the buzzer to take their first lead of the game at 22-21.

WJC would open the second quarter with seven consecutive points between Tolson and Taylor Frizzell to push their lead out to seven.

Both teams would trade baskets until the halftime buzzer with William Jewell leading 48-47 heading into the break.

S&T's offense would get the push it needed in the third quarter, not only regaining their lead from the first half, but getting up by as much as eight after a lay-up from Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) and a three-pointer from Rodriguez.

Once again, Jewell would fight their way back within three of the Miners and make it a 66-63 lead for S&T going into the final quarter.

Jewell's offense came alive in the final quarter, scoring 25 points in the final 10 minutes of play and holding the Miners to just two points in the final two minutes of play. WJC's four free-throws in the final 30 seconds of play would secure them the win and hand S&T the 88-82 loss.

Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) led the way for the Miners with a game-high 24 points while Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) added in 13 points while going 3-4 from behind the arc. Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) and Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) also hit double-digit scoring with 10 points each while Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Missouri S&T (7-10, 3-7 GLVC) will be back in action next weekend when they travel south to take on Drury University on Thursday night and Southwest Baptist on Saturday afternoon.
