LIBERTY, Mo. – Despite a big second half from
Dulan Scott (Chicago, IL/Farragut Academy), the Missouri S&T men's basketball team was unable to complete a rally Saturday afternoon and fell to William Jewell 77-71 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest at the Mabee Center.
Scott scored 22 of his team-high 24 points over the final 20 minutes in trying to rally the Miners (4-12, 2-8 GLVC) back from a pair of second half deficits. S&T overcame a 10-point difference at the half and held the lead for a moment, before the Cardinals (8-10, 3-7 GLVC) took the advantage back and extended it to nine before holding off S&T's second rally effort.
The first half started out as a back-and-forth affair, as the teams swapped the lead 11 times in the first 10 minutes before the Cardinals got a three-pointer from Nick Bradley at the 9:41 mark to spark a 12-0 run. William Jewell built its advantage to as many as 12 points before the Miners trimmed it to 10 at 37-27 at the half.
S&T began trimming into the lead at the start of the second half and was down by six with 11:53 remaining, but a three-pointer by
Dawson Berry (Centralia, IL/Centralia), two free throws by
Chima Oduocha (Hoffman Estates, IL/Conant) and a lay-in by
Mitch Fairless (St. Charles, MO/Duchesne) gave the Miners a 48-47 lead with 10:17 to go. However, Jackson Golightly drained a three-pointer 18 seconds later to put Jewell back in front.
The Cardinals pushed that lead back out to nine with 5:39 to go, but the Miners made one more run at them, starting with back-to-back three-pointers by
Jordan Newt (San Francisco, CA/Malibu) and Scott. Scott hit another three-pointer with 3:53 left to bring the Miners to within four and hit his fifth trey of the half with 34 seconds left to make it 74-71, but that would be as close as S&T would get in the final minute.
Fairless also scored in double figures as he finished with 16 points, but the Miners shot only 39.7 percent in the game and had nine of their 13 turnovers in the second half. S&T did outrebound the Cardinals by nine despite a double-double by Jewell's Eysan Wiley, who finished with game highs of 26 points and 15 rebounds.
The Miners continue their three-game stretch away from home Thursday when they take on Drury in a 7:45 p.m. contest in Springfield, Mo.
