Box Score ST. LOUIS, MO- S&T opened the new week of GLVC play on a high note with an 82-74 win over the Saints of Maryville University. With this win, the Miners swept the Saints in GLVC play for the year and picked up a win in the Simon Athletic Center for the first time since Maryville joined the league back in 2010.
The Miners opened play on a 16-5 run that was capped off with a three-point basket from
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) with just under five minutes remaining in the quarter. The Saints would get six last minute points between Mary Barton and UU Longs to make it an 18-13 game after the first 10 minutes.
S&T's defense would falter in the opening minutes in the second quarter, watching Maryville go on an 11-0 run and take a 24-18 lead.
Tristen McFeders (Kansas City, Mo./Bishop Miege) would give the Miners their lead back with 4:32 remaining in the half when she got an elbow jumper to fall. From there, both teams would trade baskets until the end of the quarter where the Miners would take a 34-33 lead heading into the break.
The third quarter was much the same as the second, both teams trading baskets and neither able to pull away from the other.
S&T got four points from senior center
Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) at the end of the 10 minutes for their largest lead at 56-50, since the opening quarter.
Missouri S&T would take their largest lead of game after
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) drained a three-pointer to open the fourth quarter and a three-point play from Baylor on the next possession. Their 62-50 lead would be threatened by the Saints after MU's Barton scored 10 quick points.
The Miners would build their lead back up late in the game with three consecutive baskets from
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township),
Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay), and
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy). They would fight to keep their lead until the last buzzer as the Saints defense pressured the Miners in the front court.
Ten made free-throws in the last minute of the game would seal the deal for the Miners for the 82-74 win and complete the season sweep of the Saints.
Multiple Miner players had career performances tonight;
Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) led the team with 17 points and a career best 17 rebounds while
Tristen McFeders (Kansas City, Mo./Bishop Miege) picked up her first double-digit performance as a Miner with 11 points while also dishing out a career best four assists.
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy), who has a history of playing well against the Saints, chipped in 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds while
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) and
Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) added in 12 and 11, respectively.
As a team, Missouri S&T (7-8, 3-5 GLVC) shot 49% from the field and went 7-16 from long range.
S&T will finish the week at home on Thursday against the Hawks of Rockhurst University and on the road on Saturday at William Jewell.
