Miners Fall Short at Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, MO- The Miners got back to GLVC play tonight as they took on the Lions of Lindenwood University. While S&T kept it a close game, Lindenwood would pull away from the Miners late in the fourth to hand Missouri S&T the 73-60 loss.

It was a tight race to gain control in the opening quarter, neither team able to gain a marginal lead from the other. Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) proved to be the Miners saving grace in the first 10 minutes; she went 4-4 from the field for eight of the teams 11 points and pulled down four rebounds. While S&T had the lead for the first seven minutes of the game, the offense of Lindenwood came alive and finished the quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 16-11 lead after one.

Both the Lions and Miners played to a draw in the second quarter. While the Miners did see a deficit as much as nine, back-to-back baskets from Katey Brown (Craig, Neb./West Point Central Catholic) and Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) at the end of the half put them back within five of the Lions and head into the break down 34-29.

While the Miners got within three of the Lions to open the half, both teams would end up trading baskets for the 10 minute stretch. Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) found her groove in the third, scoring seven of the team's 15 points in the quarter, and opened second half play with an easy lay-up to make it a 34-31 game. From there, S&T would be held to just 13 points for the rest of the quarter and faced a 51-44 deficit heading into the final stretch.

The offense of the Lions proved to be too much for the Miners in the fourth as Julia Ruzevich led Lindenwood with 10 points in the quarter. While LU's offense got hot, S&T's six turnovers in the final stanza did not help matters.

S&T saw their greatest deficit of the game when Devin Fuhring hit a three-pointer with 36 seconds left in the game off a second-chance rebound. Tristen McFerders would get a running jumper to fall with just 20 seconds left in the game, but it would be too late for the Miners to make a comeback as they fell 73-60.

Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) led the charge tonight for S&T with 15 points on 7-11 shooting while Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) picked up her seventh double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds while adding three blocks.

As a team, Missouri S&T (5-4, 1-1 GLVC) shot 41.9% from the field and held Lindenwood to just 21% from long range. The Miners will be back in action this Saturday when they take on the Tritons of Missouri-St. Louis (5-6, 0-2 GLVC).
