ROLLA, MO- The Miners faced another GLVC setback today, falling to the top-ranked Panthers of Drury University 97-76.
S&T held their own in the first half, matching Drury shot for shot.
Ashley Harvey (Raytown, Mo./Raytown) got the team within one with just over four minutes left in the first quarter. An up-and-under move gave her a wide open lay-up to make it a 14-13 game. While Drury attempted to pull away from the Miners, baskets from Harvey,
Tristen McFeders (Kansas City, Mo./Bishop Miege), and
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) threatened the top-ranked Panthers.
Drury's Paige Robinson would push their lead out to three just before the end of the quarter with a floater in the lane and make it a 22-19 game.
While the Miners fought to keep it close in the first quarter, the offense of the Panthers proved to be too hard to stop.
A 32-point second quarter, the included 20 of those in the paint, put the Miners into a hole they would not be able to come back from. DU would extend their lead out to as much as 22 in the second stanza and maintain that lead through most of the second half.
After the major defensive lag in the second and third quarters, the Miners were able to cut into their deficit late in the fourth quarter.
With 2:51 left in the game,
Kristin Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster CHristian Academy) drained a three-pointer from the right wing to put S&T back within 19 of the Panthers. Both teams traded points for the remainder of the game with Drury handing the Miners their second straight loss with a final score of 97-78.
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) led the way for the Miners with 13 points on 5-8 shooting while
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) and
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Despite the loss, Missouri S&T (6-8, 2-5 GLVC) shot 52% from the field and forced Drury into 16 turnovers.
