ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's basketball team got off to a good start Saturday afternoon, but couldn't sustain its hot start from the field and fell to Drury 86-67 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at Gibson Arena.
The Miners (3-10, 1-6 GLVC) opened the game by making seven of their first 13 shots from the field and built an eight-point lead just over four minutes into play, going up 16-8 following a basket by
Dulan Scott (Chicago, IL/Farragut Academy). Moments later,
Nathan Elmer (Nixa, MO/Nixa) answered a Conley Garrison three-pointer with one of his own to put the lead back to eight.
Dawson Berry (Centralia, IL/Centralia) hit the Miners' sixth three-pointer of the first half with 13:29 to play to give S&T a 22-17 lead, but the Miners started cooling down from the field after that basket as they made just two of their final 15 field goal attempts in the half.
Even as the shooting percentage went down, the Miners were able to stay on pace with Drury (11-4, 4-3 GLVC) and grabbed a 35-34 lead on
Yahmir Muhammad's (Rockford, IL/Auburn) lay-up with 1:25 to play before halftime. After Asa Hutchinson's three-point play gave the Panthers the lead back, S&T tied the score at 37 when
Mitch Fairless (St. Charles, MO/Duchesne) hit a pair of free throws with 43 seconds on the clock.
However, Drury's Isaac Johnson scored the final five points of the half on a three-pointer and lay-in following a turnover just before the buzzer sounded to give the Panthers a five-point lead at the break. Drury then opened the second half by taking advantage of the Miners' continued cold spell – S&T missed its first 11 field goal attempts in the half – to extend its lead to 15 before S&T broke the field goal drought on Scott's lay-in with 11:37 remaining.
The Miners shot just 31.5 percent in the game, but did have four players in double figures led by Scott with 13 points. Muhammad,
Jordan Newt (San Francisco, CA/Malibu) and
Dawson Berry (Centralia, IL/Centralia) all finished with 10 points on the afternoon.
Drury, meanwhile, connected on 60 percent of its shots in the contest and got a game-high 22 points from Garrison, who made six-of-eight from beyond the arc and hit all but one of the Panthers' three-point baskets.
Missouri S&T will head on the road Monday to take on Maryville University in a 7:30 p.m. contest in St. Louis.
