ROLLA, Mo. – After missing a chance to win its season opener in regulation time, Missouri S&T's Paul Benum scored in the sixth minute of overtime to give the Miners a 2-1 victory over Ouachita Baptist Friday night at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
The Miners were just over a minute away from recording a shutout victory in regulation when Jakob Cuellar drilled in a shot from outside the box to tie the score. However, the Miners – who controlled play for a majority of the contest – got the upper hand in the extra period when Benum got a ball in the offensive zone from
Joe Mueller (Cottleville, MO/Francis Howell Central HS) and hit a shot to the right of OBU goalkeeper to win it with just 5:42 gone.
S&T got the only goal in the first 88-plus minutes of play when freshman
Bertram Gjelfort (Frederiksberg, Denmark/Falkonergaarden) got to a ball that was caroming around the front of the goal and hit a shot into the back of the net. The Miners controlled the flow of play for a large portion of the contest, outshooting the Tigers 19-4 and creating 14 corner kick chances, but couldn't get an additional goal along the way.
Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) made three saves in goal for S&T, who opened its season on a winning note for just the second time in the last five seasons.
Missouri S&T returns to action Sunday when it hosts 22
nd-ranked Northeastern State at 1 p.m. at Allgood-Bailey Stadium. The RiverHawks were bumped off Friday in their season opener when they lost 1-0 at Drury.
