Miners' rally effort falls short against No. 22 RiverHawks

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T tried in vain to overcome a two-goal deficit in the second half Sunday afternoon against 22nd-ranked Northeastern State, but the rally effort came up short as the RiverHawks came away with a 3-1 win at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

The Miners (1-1) had cut a 2-0 NSU lead in half when Tyler Sivadon (Spring, TX/Concordia Lutheran) scored in the 73rd minute and kept the pressure on in the final minutes to try and notch the equalizer.  But in the final minute of play, a clearing pass by the RiverHawks led to a breakaway by Matthew Corness and a goal that iced the contest.

Northeastern State (1-1) broke on top in the 17th minute when Aaron Ugbah took a crossing pass and hit a shot past S&T goalkeeper Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville), then he assisted on NSU's second goal when he sent a ball to the far post that was redirected by Ameer Madden just inside the post to make it 2-0.

S&T, which had possession of the ball for about 40 percent of the first half, evened the possession numbers out more in the final 45 minutes and eventually got on the scoreboard when Sivadon headed in a cross from Shane Cairns (North Olmstead, OH/North Olmstead) to get the Miners back to within a goal.

The Miners continued to keep pressure on the RiverHawk defense over the final 12-plus minutes, which included a pair of late corner kick chances, but the clearing pass by James Doyle with less than a minute remaining that led to the goal ended any comeback hopes.

S&T outshot Northeastern State 12-11 in the game and had eight corner kicks to two for the RiverHawks; the Miners also hit a goal post and the crossbar on shot attempts.  Northeastern had four shots on net to three for S&T.

Missouri S&T will open its Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule next Sunday when it faces Maryville at 2:30 p.m. in St. Louis.
