Miners, Flyers play to a draw

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first half Sunday afternoon, but Lewis came back and salvaged a tie with a goal in the latter stages of the second half as the teams played to a 2-2 draw in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

The Miners (3-3-1, 2-2-1 GLVC) got on the scoreboard first when Bertram Gjelfort (Frederiksberg, Denmark/Falkonergaarden) took a pass from Jason Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria) and hit a low shot past Lewis goalkeeper C.J. Couper in the 19th minute for his second goal in as many games.

S&T scored again in the 27th minute as Tim Schreffl (Rosenheim, Germany/Findsterwalder Gymnasium) put a high shot past Couper off a pass from Sean Perryman (Springfield, MO/Glendale), but the Flyers (5-1-2, 3-1-2 GLVC) got that goal back less than three minutes later on a tally by Konrad Malinowski.

After spending much of the second half trying to fend off the Flyers – including a head ball that missed a wide open net early in the half -- Lewis tied the game in the game's 76th minute when Jayson Iniguez got a ball at the top of the box and hit it past S&T's Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville).

Both sides had opportunities for the game-winning goal, as Posey turned away two shots late in regulation time and another in the final moments of the second overtime period, while the Miners had a golden opportunity in the first overtime when Gjelfort got free for a moment behind the defense but had his shot stopped by Couper.

Lewis had a 17-4 advantage in shots and had eight on goal to S&T's three.  Posey was credited with six saves for the Miners.

Missouri S&T continues its homestand Friday when it hosts William Jewell at 7:30 p.m.
