ROLLA, Mo. – Despite holding a large advantage in shots, Missouri S&T was unable to get one of them into the net Friday night and settled for a scoreless tie with William Jewell in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
The tie extended S&T's unbeaten streak to three games – its first three-game run without a setback since late September in the 2017 season – and moves the Miners to 3-3-2 overall and 2-2-2 in GLVC play.
The first half was a wide open affair, as the Cardinals (0-7-1, 0-5-1 GLVC) got three of their six shots on goal and the Miners also got three shots to goalkeeper Jose Cambreros out of the nine they took. However, the game was scoreless when it reached the intermission.
S&T had three shots on goal in the early moments of the second half, including a quick breakaway by
Mitch Mueller (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) that was turned away by Cambreros. About 15 minutes later,
Tyler Sivadon (Spring, TX/Concordia Lutheran) had a shot at the top of the box that was stopped as the Miners were beginning to gain control of the flow of play.
With just over five minutes remaining in regulation time, the Miners got another great scoring chance when Sigurd Semlitch got free on the wing, but hit his shot just over the crossbar. Then before regulation time expired,
Julien Denis (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) got a shot away that was stopped by Cambreros to send the contest into overtime.
Both teams had good opportunities in the first overtime, but Jewell's Cody Benedict and S&T's
Bertram Gjelfort (Frederiksberg, Denmark/Falkonergaarden) each hit a shot over the top of the goal from in front. The Cardinals had the best chance in the second overtime, but S&T's
Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) turned away a shot by Alex Theissen with just over a minute remaining on the clock.
Missouri S&T outshot William Jewell 25-12 in the game and 13-4 in shots on net; Posey was credited with four saves as he recorded his second shutout in the last eight days.
The Miners close their four-game homestand Sunday when they host Rockhurst in a 2:30 p.m. contest.
