ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team overcame two deficits in Sunday's Great Lakes Valley Conference contest against Rockhurst, but a late goal by Federico Verlicchi allowed Rockhurst to escape Allgood-Bailey Stadium with a 3-2 win over the Miners.
Verlicchi put the Hawks (4-4-1, 4-3 GLVC) on top when he headed in Trevor Cissell's cross from just inside the top of the box, as he got the header just over the outstretched hands of S&T goalkeeper
Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) in the fifth minute of play.
About eight minutes later, the Miners (3-4-2, 2-3-2 GLVC) got a head-ball goal of their own when
Bertram Gjelfort (Frederiksberg, Denmark/Falkonergaarden) got on the end of a cross from
Tim Schreffl (Rosenheim, Germany/Findsterwalder Gymnasium) and headed it past Peter Baker to tie the contest. However, the Hawks took the lead back in the 32
nd minute when Pablo Salvador Lopez got a through ball and scored.
S&T missed a good scoring opportunity late in the first half when it was unable to connect on a cross in front of the net as it went to the half trailing 2-1. The Miners then appeared to have scored a game-tying goal following a free kick in the 63
rd minute, but S&T was called for offsides.
Gjelfort had another good scoring chance in the 76
th minute when his redirected shot was stopped by a diving Baker, but the Miners were able to knot the score in the 79
th minute when Baker stopped a shot by
Jason Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria), but
Julien Denis (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) got to the rebound and hit it into a vacant net.
With just over seven minutes to go, Verlicchi got to a loose ball at the top of the box and fired a shot past Posey for hit second goal of the contest that decided the contest.
Missouri S&T outshot Rockhurst 17-11 in the game and had eight shots on net to the Hawks' seven. Posey finished with four saves in goal for S&T, who saw its three-game unbeaten streak come to an end.
The Miners, in the midst of a stretch of playing seven home games in a span of eight contests, will play the one road game Friday when they take on Lindenwood in a 7:30 p.m. contest in St. Charles, Mo.
