ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Missouri S&T was knotted up with Lindenwood into the second half Friday night, but the Lions scored two second half goals to win the Great Lakes Valley Conference contest by a count of 2-0.
The Miners (3-5-2, 2-4-2 GLVC) outshot Lindenwood 7-3 in a scoreless first half, but the Lions (4-4-2, 3-3-2 GLVC) broke on top in the 63
rd minute when Thomas Hutcheson scored on a ball that was played in front and loose about eight yards from the net; Hutcheson knocked it in for the first goal of the contest.
S&T had a good scoring chance in the 75
th minute on a free kick that got through the Lion defense, but no Miner could get to it before Lindenwood goalkeeper Tim Licht did. A couple of minutes later, Licht got to a cross near the net just prior to S&T's
Austin Parks (Rolla, MO/Rolla) to prevent a potential game-tying goal.
In the 86
th minute,
Julien Denis (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) got an open look from about 15 yards but the shot was off-target, then the Lions got a goal to ice the contest when Joshua Scholl got free and scored with under three minutes remaining on the clock.
The Miners finished the contest with a 10-7 advantage in shots, but the Lions had four shots on net to S&T's three.
Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) finished with two saves in goal for the Miners.
Missouri S&T returns home Sunday to begin its final homestand of the season as it hosts Missouri-St. Louis at 2:30 p.m. The Tritons picked up their first conference win Friday when they stunned second-ranked Maryville 1-0.
