ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team withstood a hat trick by Missouri-St. Louis' Magnus Andersen Sunday afternoon at Allgood-Bailey Stadium, as
Paal Benum (Trondheim, Norway/Byaasen Videregaadende) scored 68 seconds into the second overtime period to give the Miners a 4-3 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over the Tritons.
Benum got a pass out of the corner from
Julien Denis (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) and hit a shot from the top of the box past UMSL goalkeeper Jordan Hurt to end the wild affair. The goal was the second of the season for Benum – both of which were game-winners in overtime as he also tallied one in the season opener against Ouachita Baptist.
The Miners (4-5-2, 3-4-2 GLVC) got on the scoreboard first in the eighth minute of play when
Jacob Bandy (Bettendorf, IA/Pleasant Valley) got possession of the ball away from an UMSL defender and hit a shot to the near post that Hurt fumbled into the goal.
Andersen got his first goal of the game in the 30
th minute when he converted a penalty kick, then scored again just two minutes later when he got a feed from Tommy Naumann and hit a shot by S&T goalkeeper
Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) to give the Tritons (3-9, 1-8 GLVC) a 2-1 lead they would take to halftime.
S&T had control of play for much of the first half, but only had the one goal to show for it. But in the 64
th minute, the Miners tied the game when
Tim Schreffl (Rosenheim, Germany/Findsterwalder Gymnasium) fed
Bertram Gjelfort (Frederiksberg, Denmark/Falkonergaarden) for a shot near the top of the box that he whistled past Hurt. A little over nine minutes later,
Thomas Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria) got a pass from his brother,
Jason Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria), and scored to give the Miners a 3-2 lead.
Andersen, however, wasn't finished, as in the 77
th minute, Zac Cawvey sprung him on a short breakaway and tallied his third goal of the contest to even the score again.
The Miners had all five shots when the game reached overtime – they had a 26-12 advantage in that department – and got the game-winner early in the second period when Benum put away the shot inside the near post.
Posey was credited with three saves in goal for the Miners, who had 12 shots on net to UMSL's six.
Missouri S&T will return to action Friday at Allgood-Bailey Stadium when it hosts Truman State at 7:30 p.m.
